You may know Chris Baretto; he used to be in Periphery, and is currently in Ever Forthright and Friend For a Foe. Over the course of a few months, Ever Forthright released single after single, seemingly teasing us. Now we finally have their self-titled debut record, released at the tail end of last year. Does it deserve to be considered with 2011′s great records?

This weekend, my heart was continually broken. Tesseract and The Human Abstract released two of the best albums of the entire year, and both of them appear to have lost vocalists. While I’m absolutely sure the Tesseract rumor is true, word on The Human Abstract’s vocalist troubles are a little harder to verify, hence being filed under “WILD SPECULATION.”

The Number Of The Blog received an anonymous email on Friday that claimed that Travis Richter has left The Human Abstract, leaving the band to scramble for a vocalist before settling on a relatively unknown dude from San Diego. Rumor also has it that ex-Periphery vocalist Chris Baretto was also considered on a short list. I tried to contact Travis on Twitter, but I was given no reply, leading me to believe it’s true. After all, Travis chats with fans from time to time, and if it was just a wild lie from out of nowhere, he would have surely denied it.

This one doesn’t hit quite as hard as the Tesseract news, but it still sucks quite a bit. Travis was a great fit for the band, and his performance on Digital Veil was superb. I’m actually kind of glad they didn’t go with Baretto, as he doesn’t really have the vocal style that would meld well with The Human Abstract, and going with him would have felt too obligatory.

We’ll follow up with more info when we get it.

Haunted Shores, brainchild of guitar wizard Mark Holcomb with production duties handled by Misha Mansor of Periphery, posted an update on Wednesday that we unfortunately missed, but was picked up by our good friends at Got-Djent.com, in which Mark enlightens us on the recent silence from the HS camp.

You might remember the split EP Haunted Shores released with Cyclamen just over a year ago, which featured ex-Periphery vocalist Chris Baretto. Baretto has since moved on, and the original plan was to use a different vocalist for each track on the upcoming album, but apparently things have changed on that front:

Greetings everyone,

Mark here - just wanted to give a quick update on the current state of Haunted Shores and mainly why you haven’t heard anything from us in the past couple months. For a period of time recording of the debut full-length was halted completely; the reason for this being that we’ve been on a bit of a hiatus for the past several months - Misha has been 100% tied up with multiple Periphery tours and recording and has had basically zero time for anything else, and I have been going through some personal issues in my life which I’d rather not discuss at this point. I ask that you please leave it that but respectfully understand that these issues are outside of anything HS-related. I’d also like to thank any and all of you for your patience with the waiting. Oh, the waiting. I do feel very bad for prolonging the wait so long – and I’m incredibly grateful to all of you who still listen to the songs after all this.

So a few weeks ago or whatever, Periphery announced the departure of singer Chris Baretto and the inclusion of new singer Spencer Sotelo. Well, yesterday, Haunted Shores, one of Periphery guitarist Misha “Bulb” Monsoor‘s music projects, announced that Chris Baretto will be handling vocal duties. Wut?

Chris and Haunted Shores guitarist Mark Holcomb

Well that’s weird. Clearly, Misha and Chris are still friends and want to work together, but randomly taking Chris out of Periphery and now him joining Haunted Shores? I wonder how that conversation went down.

“Hey bro, you’re a great singer and all…”
“Yeah?”
“We’re bros and shit, but… like… we found a better singer.”
“WAT”
“I know, I know… but this is our label debut and we want to make it sound as good as possible.”
“I don’t even.”
“Oh don’t worry, bro. Come over and hang out with us at Haunted Shores.”
“Well that’s kinda pointless. Why couldn’t you just put the new guy over there?”
“That’s not confusing enough.”

Yeah. That likely happened.

Anyway, the new Haunted Shores track “When In Oslo”, featuring Baretto on vocals, sounds great. Go listen to it on the HS Myspace. This is gonna be good.

Guy with big hair = gone.

Hell if I know how many different singers Periphery have through so far. They haven’t even put out an album yet and they’ve had three or four different vocalists on board. I don’t know when previous vocalist Chris Baretto was dropped, but when listening to the new album sampler posted on MySpace, I noticed the singing was different. Specifically, in the clip of “Light”, the new vocalist is hitting notes a whole fucking octave higher than the version recorded with Baretto.

The new vocalist is Spencer Sotelo, and I think I’m liking his voice better than Baretto’s. Periphery’s debut album is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated albums of the year. It will be out on Sumerian Records April 20th.

Again, check out the sampler on Periphery’s MySpace and get excited!
