Admittedly I don’t have a lot of experience with Boris, the experimental rock band from Tokyo, Japan, but amongst my friends their reputation precedes them, and it’s more my laziness and having a thousand things to listen to at any one time more than anything.

I honestly didn’t know that they had a new album – which is very ‘what is says on the tin’-esque in that its title IS New Album – but I believe the time to check them out it now, when a stream for it has dropped onto our collective laps, which you can check out over at AOL. It’s their fifteenth full album apparently, so there are no more excuses. It’s out today on Sargent House (although I think it’s been out for a while in Japan?).

Also available is Chevelle‘s new album Hats Off To The Bull, which isn’t usually part of our remit, but JR has a soft spot for them, and he’ll be bringing you his thoughts on it a bit later. It’s out today on Epic Records, and available to stream here. Don’t say we never do anything different!

Chevelle are arguably the best band to come out of that “post grunge” era in the 90′s and early 00′s. They get lumped in (unfairly, in my opinion) with bands like Breaking Benjamin, Three Days Grace, and Staind, but Chevelle always stood out as something different; Pete Loeffler’s lyrics are certainly smarter than your average radio rock tune, drawing a huge Tool influence in pen and voice. They can still write some killer songs as well!

So Chevelle are in the studio! Chevelle’s rarely touched twitter account posted the above photo to stir up some excitement. No other info is available right now as it’s a bit too early in the process, but I know my 2011 just got better knowing I have some new Chevelle coming my way later this year. They might not be particularly heavy, if they can keep writing catchy songs without dumbing themselves down, they’re fully backed in my book.

After the jump, a video from their last album Sci-Fi Crimes, “Letter From A Thief”

I’ve said it somewhere before (probably every chance I get), but Chevelle are probably the single best radio rock band out there. What other options do you have? Nickelback? Shinedown? Hinder? Gross. Get that shit away from me. No, Chevelle is where it’s at whenever the local radio station decides to act right and actually play some rock. Our local station is called Z-Rock, for Christ sakes, and you can’t turn it on without hearing something that’s been autotuned to death. But I digress a bit. The point I’m making is Chevelle are one of the few bands on the radio I thoroughly enjoy without being ashamed to admit it. Pete Loefler is an actual lyricist, not copping out (so far) and writing the same predictable lyrics about sex, partying, and basic relationship problems.

It took me a while to really get into their latest album Sci-Fi Crimes though. Can’t put my finger on why, though. I think it might be because they’re slowly becoming softer. Even still, they can write some good songs. Their newest single “Shameful Metaphores” is one of the softer songs on the album and it’s still pretty sweet. The video is pretty run of the mill live footage, but…

Sci-Fi Crimes is out now, and it honestly isn’t bad.

Chevelle released their new single “Jars” today. While not metal, they’re top notch hard rock. Sure as hell beats the other radio rock out there.

I get to see Chevelle live next month and I’m pretty stoked.

Listen to the song below. The album Sci-Fi Crimes comes out September 8.

Hard rock band Chevelle have revealed that their upcoming album may be titled Sci-Fi Crimes, which is expected to be out in August.

On their recent tour, they played two new songs, titled “Sleep Apnea” and “Letter From a Thief”. Not surprisingly, videos of the songs being performed made their way to the internet.
