Earlier this year, we attempted to get burgeoning progressive death metal group Fallujah onto the Summer Slaughter Tour and urged all of you to vote for them. Unfortunately they didn’t make it and were edged out by Cerebral Bore, but they did wind up on Slaughter Survivors tour alongside Pathology. Close enough, and them being on the poll and getting such high numbers in the first place earned the band a legion of new fans! Their debut album The Harvest Wombs became a surprise hit with us when it dropped late last year and still gets the odd spin or two. We decided to reach out to the band’s frontman Alex Hofmann to get his take on this year’s new music. His selections may surprise you!

I’m Alex, the Vocalist for Fallujah from San Francisco. 2012 was an awesome year for new records; in my own personal sense it was a great year for non-metal records. Nearly everything that really stuck with me was from alterior genres.

It would appear that Cerebral Bore are now without vocalist Som Pluijmers. Via Facebook:

Som walked out on us less than 24 hours before the US tour, and we were forced to either cancel or go ahead with it as an instrumental if need be. We didn’t want to let our US fans down, so we went ahead with our buddy Shawn Whitaker on vocals for the tour. Show us your support and make Shawn feel at home, he saved us from a disaster.

Elsewhere, a statement from Som was made, but its source hasn’t been verified. From No Clean Singing:

“I decided to leave because Paul McGuire treated me bad… And him saying I walked out on them like Im a bitch is ridiculous. Im not a diva, I had to do this for my own happiness and safety. He woudnt let us have an own opinion or wouldnt let me have friends and screamt at us all the time. Im sorry but I was too unhappy with him and had to leave. There was more going on than this but if hes gonna start bullshit than im more than happy to tell you guys the truth. I had to do this for me and thought about fans etc. it was a difficult decision… But for the best…Its about the music indeed. I used to think this about other bands too. But we are the ones who have to eat, sleep, travel and are around each other all the time. Living with someone youre scared of is the not good guys, I hope you understand. Please take care.”

Now, I don’t really want to dismiss the band as a novelty — that would be unfair — but it certainly can be seen that Som taking the ranks as Cerebral Bore vocalist is what made them so popular as a brutal death metal band. She went from YouTube cover vocalist to a frontwoman at just 18 years old, which lead to Cerebral Bore being signed to Earache Records and likely the reason why so many bothered to check them out in the first place. I mean, when I found out that a woman was making those deep guttarals, I was interested. I hate to sound sexist and to write the band off as a gimmick, but let’s face it: she and Cerebral Bore were outliers, which made them stand out from the hundreds of other brutal death metal bands out there.

Hopefully the band and Som can both move on from this and further their careers, though it’ll just likely be one of those parties that can manage to do it with ease.

Band drama is often highly amusing and so very sweet. Case in point: Cattle Decapitation (above) have dropped off their current tour with Six Feet Under after Chris Barnes allegedly sucker punched Travis Ryan (center left). What!?

Here’s the skinny, collected via The PRP:

Travis Ryan:

“Chris Barnes is a fucking hack. I’ve personally passed on at least five Six Feet tours over the last 8 or so years because he pulls so much nonsense on the support bands because his ego is astronomical. We’re leaving the Chris Barnes Show tour today. Go to the Chris Barnes show and buy some of their merch. They need it desperately.”

“He couldn’t handle the fact that we were destroying him nightly on merch and talked shit about us on stage last night. I went to confront him about that and he sucker punched me as I was talking. He immediately RAN out the door and fled to his bus like he does every night when the two fans that are left for their show are trying to get him to sign something.”

“We’re leaving because we have no interest in bringing more people to the chris barnes show. There was no “fight”. He punched me, RAN away and a few people saw it. I just walked out told his tour manager the deal, wrapped up the merch and left.”

“Just don’t go to the show and please get the word out. Cattle Decapitation is not doing this tour as we no longer wish to bring people to his show. Cuz its HIS show. More than enough people have drilled that fact into us.”

“Here’s how chris barnes works: punches. Runs. Does the Rocky dance like he’s a badass on his tour bus he’s about to not fuckin afford.”

Chris Barnes:

“If you eat tofu you’ll get you’re ass kicked in a fight. #knocked out”

“Bottom line if you break into someone’s back stage start calling them names and get in someone’s face what do u think will happen?

Oh and Btw it WAS NOT a sucker punch. I didn’t even throw a punch.”

If what Travis says is true (and it has been known that Chris Barnes is less than pleasant to deal with on a certain front — the tofu remark makes that evident enough), then this is something absolutely ridiculous to him to be fighting over. There are two sides to every story obviously, but either way I’m sure whatever happened didn’t need to result in someone getting punched. The whole thing just reeks of immaturity, though I’m on the side of Cattle Decap out of principle.

So if you want to see Cattle Decapitation, you’re gonna have to wait until later this month when they hit the road with Dying Fetus and Cerebral Bore. Dates after the jump!

The first impression you get of Reading when you visit is that it is essentially ‘miniature London’ — people surge in every direction at once in rush hour and you’re lucky to get a step to yourself on an escalator. The bustling high street was completed by combinations of  pub, Subway and Poundland in a random order and after a good half an hour spent searching for it, it was unsurprising to find the Sub89 nestled cosily above the latter. Alas, my ‘country bumpkin’ was showing but with a whole evening of brutal death metal ahead there wasn’t much room for complaining and my luck would continue, in the form of a broken till when it came time for me to buy my round of drinks.

So with a belly full of free alcohol, we went straight into Scottish brutalisers Cerebral Bore. Ruthless riffs and sickening slams were the name of the game and after run-throughs of tracks like ‘The Bald Cadaver‘ and ‘Maniacal Miscreation‘, it was hard not to be completely mesmerized by the organised carnage taking place on stage. Guitarist Paul McGuire, clad in his traditional Devourment t-shirt, violated every nook and cranny of the fret board and vocalist Som commanded the crowd effortlessly. Cerebral Bore put on a hell of a show, marred only slightly by the standard twat at the back shouting ‘Get your tit’s out!’ after the first track. Yeah buddy, we get it. You haven’t seen a breast since you’ve been old enough to suckle on one. Get the fuck over it.

While they weren’t my first choice, I’m excited that Cerebral Bore have won the fan-voting contest to open Summer Slaughter Tour 2012. This makes them the first band with a female vocalist to ever be on the tour. Awesome! That just makes the lineup that much more exciting! Congratulations go out to those guys, as they deserve it. Let’s hope they get the visas sorted this time!

For those who haven’t been keeping track, here’s the lineup as it stands as of 3/22:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Periphery
Job For A Cowboy
Veil of Maya
Goatwhore
Exhumed
????? [likely Fleshgod Apocalypse]
Cerebral Bore

This is likely the best tour you’ll see this year in America. EVERY BAND is killer. I cannot wait for the dates to be announced. We’ll relay those to you as they come in!

UPDATE: 8:50 PM — So White Arms Of Athena did not make it, despite the buzz I saw on the page for them and Fallujah! Major bummer. However, Vildhjarta are now in the official running and need your help to make Summer Slaughter 2012 their first American tour! Go and vote for Vildhjarta!

Last night’s scheduled announcement for The Summer Slaughter tour was a dud. They haven’t been very good on their weekly announcements on Sunday, and it’s been two weeks since the last announcement, admittedly for reasons outside of their control. There was however a legitimate update regarding the potential openers of the trek, with the top runners being Fallujah, Cerebral Bore, and Aegaeon. The Summer Slaughter Tour are still taking fan votes and are even considering letting fans choose two openers for the tour, so I’d like to extend my support towards frontrunner Fallujah and an available underdog, White Arms of Athena.

This year’s Summer Slaughter is a fairly clear-cut crossroads of death metal and prog, with Cannibal Corpse and Between the Buried and Me at opposite ends of the spectrum. This was a great move on the people who booked this tour, as there’s something for almost everyone. Here’s the thing though; balancing the lineup evenly between the two will offer maximum satisfaction for all of the fans involved. Here’s how I’m breaking down the lineup:

A: Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal*, Exhumed, Goatwhore, Job For A Cowboy*
B: Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Veil of Maya

* = rumored

As it is right now, there’s not much of a balance. Much like The Faceless, Fallujah are a shoe-in and would easily fit among the prog bands as well as the death metal crowd. I also feel that they deserve the spot as a comeback from their recent van accident. There’s not going to be too much more work involved in getting these guys on the bill, as they’ve mobilized their fanbase quite a bit already.

Here’s the hard part: White Arms of Athena. They’re much more obscure, but they’d help balance things in BTBAM’s corner considerably. These guys need a shot at bigger tours, and Summer Slaughter would be a great help for getting them a wider audience. I feel that they deserve this shot.

If you like my reasoning, go to The Summer Slaughter Tour’s Facebook page and tell them you want Fallujah and White Arms of Athena on the lineup. If you don’t like my picks, then vote for whoever you deem worthy! It’s pretty awesome of Summer Slaughter to open up the night with fans’ choices anyway, so go and take advantage!

One of my favorite YouTube personalities has to be Ed “Infidel Amsterdam” Veter. Watching him, it just goes to show that people who listen to death metal and immerse themselves in the metal scene don’t always have to be close minded elitists. 9 times out of 10, you can ask a dude in an obscure death metal shirt about what he thinks of Suicide Silence and the answer would be something along the lines of “shit sucks, innit?” When asked of deathcore and the like, Inf simply said something along the lines of “it’s great that people like it, but it’s not for me. Who am I to say that this music is better than that?” I paraphrase of course, but the dude’s awesome. It pays to be respectful!

It was through Infidel Amsterdam when I first heard the Scottish brutal death metal band Cerebral Bore. What struck me odd about this band is that the brutal gutteral vocals are coming from female vocalist Som Pluijmers. If you didn’t know any better, you’d listen to Cerebral Bore and envision a big burly man. Som’s got more balls than most, that’s for sure.

So given this vessel of discovery, it’s only fitting that Infidel Amsterdam debuts the band’s new track ‘Horrendous Acts of Iniquity’ during one of his vlogs. You can listen to it above at around 4:35 if you’re strapped for time and want to cut to the chase. The track is as crushing as I’d have hoped for and expected from the band. I still can’t get over the source of that voice. Good lord!

The track will be available on iTunes as a digital single February 20th. Keep up with Cerebral Bore on Facebook for impending information on their upcoming sophomore record, due out this year on Earache Records.

It wasn’t until I started reading metal blogs that I realised that I really don’t have it that bad when it comes to getting to metal shows. Sure, I may have to go a couple of hours out of my way to get to a show but they’re fairly regular (the next three months are going to be particularly awesome) and it’s nothing compared the expeditions I’ve heard other people taking on. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t be jealous of this spectacular US tour involving Goatwhore, Hate Eternal, Fallujah and Cerebral Bore.

I mean look at that lineup! Goatwhore are a ridiculously talented band, taking the Slayer-isms that everyone tries so hard to recreate and takes it to a whole new level of intensity and I can definitely vouch for the sheer pummeling aural assault that is a Hate Eternal  live show after seeing them earlier in the year. Pretty sure I’ve made it clear already how much I love Cerebral Bore and judging by the sounds of Nayon’s praise I should certainly be jumping on the Fallujah hype train before they’re snorting blow off stripper’s breasts in Charlie Sheen’s mansion.

So, people of America, I have my excuse of being English, what’s yours?

You know it’s been a good year for music when:

  • a) your first draft for the ‘Top 20 For 2011′ initially contains more than twice the required amount and took 5 revised versions to get right
  • b) you have to miss out on records from some great artists like Fuck The Facts, Pathology, Amon Amath, Autopsy and Hate Eternal due to the sheer volume of great records released
I could easily eat months into 2012 just catching up on those records and the countless other recommendations around the web but I’d much rather bite the bullet and start with a clean slate. So here it is, needless to say I will have probably changed my mind by the time this is posted, but as of the 22th of December this is the best I can do.
