Here’s another tour for you folks to throw all of your money at: All Shall Perish has a headlining tour coming up in April featuring support from Carnifex, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Conducting from the Grave, and The Contortionist. Most of this lineup is absolutely stellar, and I’m sure I don’t have to tell you which band will serve as my so-called “beer break,” (and I don’t even drink). Here’s a hint: I’ve seen them twice already.

Okay, it’s Carnifex. Sorry. They get a good audience reaction and they’re really cool guys in person, but they’re not my cup of tea. I’ve never seen Fleshgod Apocalypse or The Contortionist live though, and I am quite excited at the prospect of seeing them finally perform. Fleshgod Apocalypse had one of the best death metal records last year with Agony, and The Contortionist are arguably the future of prog and are easily the best deathcore band out there. Having them both on the same bill makes the show and the trip out worth it. I’ve heard that both bands are excellent live, so I look forward to seeing them.

As any regular reader of this piece of webspace knows, I live near the eastern tip of Kentucky, near the border of West Virginia. This geological environment doesn’t typically attract metal acts, so I have to drive four hours in any direction to see a decent metal show. So imagine my surprise when I drove out to Louisville, KY for Born of OsirisThe Discovery Tour to end up in a shithole worse than my own home town. I’m talking destroyed trailer parks, several shady porn stores, bars, and strip joints PER STREET, and where the local metal venue doubles as a flea market, where not hours before the show, there was used furniture lined up in front of the stage where I was to be standing soon enough.

This was literally a block away from the venue.

It was a charming place, and my fear of getting mugged was only second to how nauseated I still get prior to interviewing bands. I spent the hours leading up to showtime with two friends of mine, browsing what could have been bootleg DVDs, getting sick at White Castle (where we awkwardly shared our meal with a sheepish homeless man, who was rudely yelled at by an employee), and anxiously awaiting the arrival of French deathcore band Betraying the Martyrs, where I was to interview bassist Valentin Hauser (coming soon!). I’ve got to say, Betraying the Martyrs are one of the most humble and friendly bands I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting. Their live show decimates, but a little more on that later on.

Now, I wasn’t given one of those neat and coveted laminated passes or anything, but since I was in the venue before any of the band members and I was seen interviewing Valentin earlier, I just hung out in and around the backstage area and was never asked to leave. I meandered about, bouncing between watching Born of Osiris soundcheck to befriending the young local opening act of the evening, deathcore band Internal Affliction, who were out back anxiously gathering their equipment. Being on the inside really gave me a first hand look at what goes into production, and it’s not an easy task. This evening was to be riddled with technical difficulties, which was foreshadowed by Logic crashing on BoO’s Mac during soundcheck. I overheard a member of Carnifex (his name and position escapes me) chuckle, “this should be interesting.”

Sumerian Records has been hinting around at this tour for a while, and now the announcement has finally been made. This November, Born of Osiris will be embarking on a North American headlining tour, and they’ll be taking Veil of Maya, Carnifex, Structures, and Betraying the Martyrs along for the ride.

This year has not only been excellent in terms of music, but the tours have been absolutely fantastic, don’t you think?! I mean, I could take or leave Carnifex and Structures, neither of which I care for. I saw Carnifex on Summer Slaughter 2010 and the scenebro hardcore dancing during their set was more entertaining than their set itself, and I have no opinion on Structures either way. At any rate, Born of Osiris are due their own specific headlining tour in support of their fantastic latest release in The Discovery. Veil of Maya put on a killer set and can really command a crowd, and I’m excited that Betraying the Martyrs have a strong tour to start off in America with. It should be good!

The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza easily had one of the best records last year in Danza III: The Series of Unfortunate Events. It was aggressive and technical, yet somehow catchy in its quirky bi-polar approach. I’ve always wanted to see them live, as they perform almost flawlessly and are fairly intense, especially guitarist Josh Travis, who can do some wild two hand tapping while thrashing around without missing a beat. Unfortunately, they’ve never came close enough and they always seem to tour with generic or terrible deathcore bands like Carnifex and Oceano. I love you Danza, but tour with Dillinger or something!

Fortunately, Hardtimes.ca captured their set recently on some tour that I didn’t keep up with. It really doesn’t matter; the important thing is that Hardtimes were there and got the footage for you so you didn’t have to wade through a sea of bros to catch their performance.

I hear that they’re working on Danza IV. Sweet Jesus, I can’t wait for that one.

[Part I | Part II]

We have again arrived on the negative side of scratchy band logos. Those who have stuck it out so far have seen some highs and some lows, experience emotions they’ve never felt before, and exercised muscles they didn’t know they had. Now we get into the really nitty-gritty. The worst of the worst. The creme de la creme of faux textures, distressed fonts and cheesy photoshop warp filters. Here are the worst scratchy band logos numbers 5 through 1.

5. ALL SHALL PERISH

This one is tough because I love All Shall Perish so much. However as I said to the kids I bullied in elementary school, I tease you because I want you to be better. Everyone knows that you should stay away from warp effects in photoshop. Unfortunately whoever created this textured monstrosity missed that memo. I’m not a fan of blackletter typefaces to begin with and the stretching and vectorization of this one did not lead to a pleasing result.

I don’t get to go to metal shows very often, so I have to pick and choose wisely. It seemed to me that Summer Slaughter’s stop fell on a Friday within a 4 hour distance and had arguably the best lineup, so that’s what I set my sights on. I was ready to have a good time, and all in all, I did.

However, things started off in the shitter. I was planning on and looking forward to interviewing The Red Chord’s Guy Kozowyk, but upon arriving at the box office I was turned away. Apparently, the guy at the ticket booth was not given any names under The Red Chord’s list, leaving me a bit confused, annoyed, and somewhat embarrassed. Seeing my genuine look of confusion, he offered to go and talk to the band and see what was up while I waited. After a few minutes had passed, he came back to tell me that there was too much going on backstage to get a hold of anyone and that it would be a good 20 minutes before he could reach anyone. I then noticed that people were being let in, so I said “I guess I’ll just buy a ticket and come back later,” and joined my friend (who had never heard of most of the bands on the bill) in line. Sadly, the shit didn’t stop there. Apparently it had hit the fan and sprayed all over the stage.

I could see a show if I drove about five hours, but I don’t think it’ll be worth it. I mean, the lineup would make for a great show, as I enjoy The Faceless, All Shall Perish, some of The Red Chord, Veil of Maya, and Animals as Leaders, but I don’t enjoy them enough for a 5 hour drive. I’d do it for 4 though.

I need to move to a bigger city. This rural-ness isn’t cutting it for my musical sensibilities.

Decapitated
The Faceless
All Shall Perish
The Red Chord
Veil Of Maya
Cephalic Carnage
Decrepit Birth
Carnifex
Animals As Leaders
Vital Remains

Metalsucks confirmed that the rumors were correct. Everything makes perfect sense and isn’t shocking in the least, except of course for Animals As Leaders, who stick out like jazzy and ambient sore thumbs (in a good way). Everyone else is rooted in death metal/deathcore. I can imagine the deathcore kiddies being slightly confused for their set.

“WAT, NO BREAKDOWNS? WHAT IS THIS SHIT?!”

Everything looks pretty solid except for Carnifex, and they suck ass. It’s a shame they go on AFTER Animals as Leaders.

No tour dates just yet. I’ll get them to you as soon as they get to me and I get my supply of coffee and cocaine.
