Tag Archive: Cannibal Corpse

Sometimes music videos don’t have to be clever to be enjoyable. In fact, I’m pretty sure the brainstorm of ideas for the new Cannibal Corpse video went something along the lines of:

Person A: ‘We need ideas on what to shoot for this new Cannibal Corpse track, ‘Encased In Concrete‘!’

Person B: ‘How about we encase a dude in…. Wait for it… Concrete!’

Person A: ‘Genius! It works on so many levels and clearly has bucket loads of visual metaphor. Somebody get me on the phone to an abandoned warehouse!’

That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it, it’s a well shot video that includes plenty of close ups of those razor sharp riffs that make their new album Torture and it sure as hell set off even my incredibly mild claustrophobia near the end. However as a bottom line you should most definitely be heading over to Bloody Disgusting to watch it just to hear how heavy ‘Encased In Concrete‘ really is. Rushing through blistering riffs, a speckless rhythm section and a distinctly manic guitar solo, Cannibal Corpse really tapped a vein of brutality on this one and whilst it didn’t catch my attention immediately, ‘Encased In Concrete‘ is a track that has unraveled itself for me on repeat listens and gone on to be one my favourite tracks from Torture. Definitely worth your time.

UPDATE: 8:50 PM — So White Arms Of Athena did not make it, despite the buzz I saw on the page for them and Fallujah! Major bummer. However, Vildhjarta are now in the official running and need your help to make Summer Slaughter 2012 their first American tour! Go and vote for Vildhjarta!

Last night’s scheduled announcement for The Summer Slaughter tour was a dud. They haven’t been very good on their weekly announcements on Sunday, and it’s been two weeks since the last announcement, admittedly for reasons outside of their control. There was however a legitimate update regarding the potential openers of the trek, with the top runners being Fallujah, Cerebral Bore, and Aegaeon. The Summer Slaughter Tour are still taking fan votes and are even considering letting fans choose two openers for the tour, so I’d like to extend my support towards frontrunner Fallujah and an available underdog, White Arms of Athena.

This year’s Summer Slaughter is a fairly clear-cut crossroads of death metal and prog, with Cannibal Corpse and Between the Buried and Me at opposite ends of the spectrum. This was a great move on the people who booked this tour, as there’s something for almost everyone. Here’s the thing though; balancing the lineup evenly between the two will offer maximum satisfaction for all of the fans involved. Here’s how I’m breaking down the lineup:

A: Cannibal Corpse, Hate Eternal*, Exhumed, Goatwhore, Job For A Cowboy*
B: Between the Buried and Me, The Faceless, Veil of Maya

* = rumored

As it is right now, there’s not much of a balance. Much like The Faceless, Fallujah are a shoe-in and would easily fit among the prog bands as well as the death metal crowd. I also feel that they deserve the spot as a comeback from their recent van accident. There’s not going to be too much more work involved in getting these guys on the bill, as they’ve mobilized their fanbase quite a bit already.

Here’s the hard part: White Arms of Athena. They’re much more obscure, but they’d help balance things in BTBAM’s corner considerably. These guys need a shot at bigger tours, and Summer Slaughter would be a great help for getting them a wider audience. I feel that they deserve this shot.

If you like my reasoning, go to The Summer Slaughter Tour’s Facebook page and tell them you want Fallujah and White Arms of Athena on the lineup. If you don’t like my picks, then vote for whoever you deem worthy! It’s pretty awesome of Summer Slaughter to open up the night with fans’ choices anyway, so go and take advantage!

While we are a couple of days late with this bit of news, in our defense it’s hard to remember to mention new songs for you folks to hear when we’ve heard them weeks ago. Yes, this whole intro paragraph was my way of gloating. Sorry about that.

Decibel Magazine is hosting the stream for the new Cannibal Corpse track ‘Encased In Concrete’, and in true Cannibal Corpse fashion, the song is as heavy as the title implies. I mean, it’s Cannibal Corpse — what would you expect?

Torture will be available to stab you in the ears on March 13th via Metal Blade Records.

One thing that has always intrigued me about the Cannibal Corpse sound is the way people respond to it. Their importance is unquestionable; they’re one of the biggest selling death metal bands ever and after 22 years, there’s no sign of them stopping or even slacking — if I had to pick one band to represent death metal, it would probably be the Corpse. However, time and time again I hear from people who just don’t like it, the most common remark being ‘I like death metal, but not Cannibal Corpse’. Honestly, I don’t really get it. There’s definitely a distinct sound — groovy death metal with smatterings of technicality that doesn’t rely on constant blastbeats to be brutal, but there’s nothing present that’s particularly offensive.

In a shocking move that surprised absolutely no one, Veil of Maya were announced as the latest addition to The Summer Slaughter Tour a couple of days early. Great success! Once again, we told you so!

Here’s the lineup as it stands:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Exhumed
Goatwhore
Veil of Maya

This leaves Job For A Cowboy and Hate Eternal from the rumored lineup and two more bands that we previously didn’t know about, assuming they continue the yearly trend of a 10 band show. Who would you like to see round out the bill? Be sure to let us know!

- JR

Metalsucks called it! This week’s addition to The Summer Slaughter Tour comes in the way of blackened thrash band Goatwhore! The band just put out a new album last week on Metal Blade called Blood for the Master, which our man Damien reviewed. We’re now about halfway through with the lineup! That brings the lineup to:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Exhumed
Goatwhore

Still pending are Job For A Cowboy, Hate Eternal, and Veil of Maya, which possibly leaves two bands that weren’t on the rumored bill to make an appearance, judging by the previous few years’ trend of a 10-bill lineup. My hopes are on Obscura (unconfirmed rumor and hearsay) and The Contortionist (posted about the lineup’s headliners on their Facebook) personally, if we’re working in the realm of ideal possibilities. What bands do you want to see on the lineup?

Tune in next week for the next band to grace this year’s Summer Slaughter Tour!

- JR

The rumored lineup keeps falling into place, as deathgrind legends Exhumed are confirmed to be playing Summer Slaughter this year. For those not keeping track, here’s how the lineup is looking right now:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Exhumed

Looking spiffy! Summer Slaughter will continue announcing new bands each week until the whole lineup is announced. Somehow though, I don’t think Exhumed are billed this high when more commercially successful acts like Job For A Cowboy or Veil of Maya are rumored, but we’ll see where it goes!

Seriously, I’m getting so pumped for all these awesome shows being announced. It was just last week that Cannibal Corpse were confirmed as the headliner for this years  Summer Slaughter Tour, but before that they’re going on what is sure to be an awesome run in the U.S. with fellow death metal cohorts Exhumed, Abysmal Dawn, and Arkaik. I’m not too familiar with that last band, but CC, Exhumed and Abysmal are fucking intense.

I’ve never seen any of them live, but there appears to be an Oklahoma City date, so I think I may have to check this out. I was bitching just a few weeks ago about not being able to go to any of these shows, but with the announcement of this tour, and upcoming Mastodon/Opeth trek, I’m certainly going to be enjoying myself this April.

Cannibal Corpse are of course releasing their new album Torture next month – March 13th to be exact – on Metal Blade, and you can hear the new preview track ‘Scourge Of Ironhere!

- EC

The more I hear about Torture, the more excited I get. Halfway through January we got a preview in the form of the truely brutal ‘Demented Aggression‘ and now Revolver are streaming another new cut from the upcoming album Torture called ‘Scourge Of Iron‘. Monday isn’t a good time for anyone but I definitely needed this mid-tempo stomp today and I would definitely suggest you head over to the Revolver site and check it out.

Cannibal Corpse are really onto something special with ‘Scourge Of Iron‘; the slow groovy chugging riffs remind me a lot of Domination-era Morbid Angel or even modern day Bloodbath and it’s been a long time since I’ve heard a guitar solo that’s made me stop and pay attention like that. It’s a slightly different approach to the normal balls-to-the-wall songwriting method the Corpse adopt but it’s not the first time they’ve dropped the tempo in favor of something that encroaches on Suffocation‘s territory. If the rest of the album is half as good as this then Torture is a definite early contender for album of the year.

It’s due out soon too – March 13th on Metal Blade!

Yeah, we know the lineup is different now, but this is the latest promo. Use your imagination!

This year’s Summer Slaughter Tour is looking like the biggest one yet, with Cannibal Corpse and Between the Buried and Me being the ticket’s highest selling points. Each week, Summer Slaughter will be announcing a new addition to the lineup until the whole bill is announced. Pretty smooth plan, as I’ll be mentioning them at least once a week until we get the dates. Hurray, marketing!

This week, we can check off another band that is confirmed for the trek from the rumored lineup that we reported a few weeks ago; The Faceless will be high on the bill. Expected, and yet still completely exciting!

Next week: Veil of Maya? Hate Eternal? Exhumed? A wildcard!? We’ll find out next week!
