I was kind of in a shitty mood this morning for things unrelated to anything anyone cares about, but seeing Mastodon‘s Brent Hinds flub his lines, clumsily interact with a dog, and try to sink shots at a gold course brought a smile to my face. Hopefully you find it just as amusing.

If you somehow missed it, Brent recently filmed a commercial for Atlanta bar and restaurant, Elmyr. You can see the pharmaceutical ad parody after the jump!

When not doing his thing in Mastodon, Brent Hinds also enjoys spending his time make psychobilly bluegrass and punk-infused country music in not one but two side-projects: Fiend Without A Face and West End Motel, respectively.

This may not be for everyone, but it’s worth a look at least if you’re a fan of the beardy bloke himself, and both bands have released albums under a two-CD banner, with the title Brent Hinds Presents: Fiend Without A Face/West End Motel – and you can stream the entire thing over at AOL(OL).

The record is actually out today through Rocket Science Ventures, so you can pick it up now if you like it!

Brent Hinds is hungry, alright. FOR MONEY!

Nah, Elmyr is actually a bar/restaurant that is a self-described “Friend of Party” out of Atlanta, Georgia that the dudes in Mastodon apparently frequent—at the official site, I’m pretty sure you can see Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor in on of the pictures on the slideshow. The commercial is a top-notch pharmaceutical ad parody from an unlikely source. Seeing Brent do yoga and play golf makes me smile on the inside, knowing that the dude fancies barfights, getting shitfaced, and growing awesome beards. Metal musicians need to tread lightly when doing ads and endorsements, but as far as Mastodon goes, starring in a comical ad about a bar that serves Mexican food? You’re pretty much doing it right!

Mastodupdate!

No, we never tire of posting this picture.

I thought about sharing the boring piece of news regarding track titles for the new Mastodon album (it’s their fifth! Who knew?) with you the other day, but it really didn’t seem worth a whole post for just that.

Thankfully, The PRP has picked up on an interview Brent Hinds did with SPIN.com regarding, amongst other things, some more in-depth news about what it’s going to be like.

Basically, the gist is that it’s almost done – apparently Blood Mountain and Crack the Skye “took too long to make”. He went on:

“This only took us a couple weeks to record and there’s a totally different feeling to it. It’s a jump-on-your-bed, get naked, and go streaking kind of record. I haven’t had this feeling about a Mastodon record since Leviathan. It’s just fucking awesome.”

“We’ve got a song about fighting, there’s a song about lifting heavy stuff, there’s a song about people on meth creeping around in trees trying to get the best wood grain out of a tree to sell it at Lowe’s for [drug] money… The album is kind of silly. We’re taking the piss out of things.”

ECDEU’s Murmurs: Bromances

gay face

This is my new series of posts as of now as seeing that I wanted a new post. The last series was very random with posting and so this one will hopefully be weekly and consistent. Also, this one has less to do with anything but metal, but will actually deal with metal. So, enjoy!

Yes, welcome to the first post of ECDEU’s Murmur! If you know anything about anything, you know that Cynic is the best thing around right now (or at least that’s what I have been digging on for the past few weeks). If you know that Cynic is the best thing around right now, then you should know the song “Adam’s Murmur”, which by now, I would hope, that you have guessed to be the source for this series’ title. But other than having the common sense to love Cynic, why else name my series after that wonderful song? Well, this starts from a few weeks ago.

At Metalsucks.net, they have been posting a series called Metta Mind Journal, written by the lead singer and guitar player of Cynic, Paul Masvidal. These posts have been amazing. They are truly stepping beyond the normal blog post and stepping into the next genre of writing called novelism (which I totally just made up for the sake of flow). I honestly feel like if he just wrote a book of these little posts, the book would fly off of the shelves. I know I would buy a copy. I actually commented on one of his posts saying that he should write a book and sub-comments reveal that other Metalsuckers believe the same way I do.

FROST HAMMER! *DUN DUN DUN DUN*

High on Fire have premiered their new video for “Frost Hammer” over at Pitchfork. The song comes off of their new album Snakes for the Divine, which is a pretty awesome record if you haven’t given it a listen for some reason. It’s a cool video, and has exactly what you expect from the performance footage: Matt Pike without a shirt. Seriously, does he ever appear fully clothed? I saw High on Fire perform live on Gigantour ’08 and he didn’t wear a shirt then either. Weird. But he can pull it off, because he’s fucking Matt Pike and will ruin your shit if you look at him the wrong way. I read somewhere that he beat Mastodon’s Brent Hinds in a drunken fistfight. This guy is the physical embodiment of metal.

Anyway, without further digression here’s the video, which is apparently an “epic tale of a warrior’s sojourn to the cold and barren Plateau of Leng where he secures the fabled Frost Hammer that will be used to enact the final rites and complete the dark rebirth and reign of the Frost Child.” Awesome.

dillingerescpln my life: make music that is the soundtrack for god beating the shit out of a pinata made of your face. Then i put fake butterflys in my tree

Yep. That sounds about right.

Dillinger Escape Plan will release their new album hopefully by the end of the year. If it’s anything like Ire Works, it will be the single best album to come out in 09. I’ve got nothing else to add, but here’s some Dillinger for your listening pleasure, featuring Mastodon’s Brent Hinds on guest vocals.
