Opeth Tour 2013

Opeth and Katatonia have quite a history behind them as being super friendly and a bit incestuous (alright, maybe that’s not quite the word I’m looking for; members of both bands did form infamous death metal group Bloodbath though). They’ve both been billed together countless times, touring the States last year together. Now it would appear that we’re getting the exact same tour again this year, which is a good thing because I missed it the first time!

Bummer alert. Influential Swedish death metal supergroup Bloodbath (famously featuring members of Katatonia and Opeth) got less super recently, as Mikael Akerfeldt is out of the picture.

Here’s what he told Loudwire [via ThePRP]:

“I’m not in Bloodbath. They have a new singer, which I can’t say who it is. Bloodbath for me was never a serious project, it was just something I did for fun. We did a few songs on the last North American tour, we did two songs at the very last show because we were touring with Katatonia, so the whole Bloodbath band was there. It’s still fun you know? But I think that some of the other guys in Bloodbath want to take it to the next level, which I don’t really want to do because I’m so busy anyways.

“It doesn’t really have to do with anything with my screaming vocals, it’s just that it’s not a progressive project for me. It’s just paying tribute to death metal and I’ve done it for such a long time. And when it stops being fun, I don’t really want to participate. We do things so rarely it’s always been fun. The shows we’ve done have been fun, but I don’t feel the need to do it.”

So yeah, there goes that. Hopefully we get to find out who the new vocalist is soon. Is he an established artist? Is it a newcomer? Does this mean we’ll get new Bloodbath soon? We’ll let you know when we find out.

One thing that has always intrigued me about the Cannibal Corpse sound is the way people respond to it. Their importance is unquestionable; they’re one of the biggest selling death metal bands ever and after 22 years, there’s no sign of them stopping or even slacking — if I had to pick one band to represent death metal, it would probably be the Corpse. However, time and time again I hear from people who just don’t like it, the most common remark being ‘I like death metal, but not Cannibal Corpse’. Honestly, I don’t really get it. There’s definitely a distinct sound — groovy death metal with smatterings of technicality that doesn’t rely on constant blastbeats to be brutal, but there’s nothing present that’s particularly offensive.

Bloodbath should need no introduction, but for the sake of avoiding exclusion, they’re a death metal supergroup of sorts featuring members of Katatonia and Opeth. The band played the rare live show in August 2010 at Bloodstock, which has now made its way to DVD via Peaceville Records.

Noisecreep is hosting a clip from the DVD featuring the song “Eaten.” It’s kinda weird seeing Mikael Akerfeldt being a frontman without a guitar, but there he is!

Check out Bloodbath over Bloodstock if this sounds like your cup of tea. It should be, but I won’t press the issue.

Swedish death metallers Benighted Iris just released their demo EP for free. While the production quality leaves a lot to be desired, the quality of the music itself is pretty good. With proper studio time, these guys would sound killer. Their music sounds like a cross between Swedish death metal and groovy djent without being deathcore, citing influences such as Bloodbath, Gojira, and Sikth. Benighted Iris are worth keeping tabs on if you’re into the Swedish metal scene, but like I said, you’ll have to look over some of this production.

You can listen to their song “Sleep of Reason” below and download the whole EP right here.
