Binary Code have had an eventful 2016, to say the least. After releasing their first full-length in 7 years, the impressive Moonsblood, the band hit the road across North America for much of the rest of the year with fellow prog-heads Leprous and Earthside. In spite of all of that though, Binary Code founder and guitarist Jesse Zuretti found plenty of time to stay on top of the goings-on in metal and elsewhere this year and eagerly wrote up his top ten metal and non-metal albums for us, which you can find after the jump!

We haven’t talked about them frequently around here, but Brooklyn-based progressive stoner/sludge outfit FAMILY are a band any fan of the harder and heavier sounds of Mastodon or Baroness should really be listening to. We loved their most recent album Future History for its awesome mixture of killer riffs, triumphant energy, and tasteful injection of other, more diverse elements. Hands-down one of the best examples of that is “Precedent,” a behemoth of a track that clocks in at a little under 7 minutes and never lets go. I had a chance to work with them recently on a guitar playthrough for the track, and I’m pleased to be premiering it right here!
So, April has come and gone and now spring is here in earnest. While there was definitely a slow down in the SHEER VOLUME of releases from April, there definitely wasn’t a decline in quality. May brought us some of our favorite albums from 2016 so far and some which are certain to feature on high spots in our end of year lists. Speaking of which, next month we won’t be doing an Editors’ Picks or rather, we will but it will be a special, Worth Your Time in 2016 so far edition. In the meantime, let’s dig in to this month’s selection, featuring some heavy, some sad and, mainly, a whole lot of excellent.
Making melodic progressive metal is hard. Progressive metal is already steeped deeply in melodic influences, which should be an easy starting point. However, dipping too much into these roots can lead your creation to move away from metal, losing its rough edge and sounding forced. So too with the other end: if you increase the heaviness and aggression, you often lose the progressive sense which was supposed to make your album interesting. Textures are the masters of this fine balancing act and one of the first bands to achieve it. No one has quite reached the same level of melodic dedication spliced with a progressive wildness that can erupt at any time. Well, no one except Binary Code.
The brainchild of Jesse Zuretti caught the community’s ear in 2009, with their debut Suspension of Disbelief, a refreshing take on what it means to record progressive metal today. That album was chock full of interesting ideas and compositions. However, in the seven years of (relative) silence, the scene has done quite a lot with itself: multiple Textures releases came and went in the interim and bands like A Sense of Gravity and Gods of Eden changed what we think and feel about the music and what it means. So, with Moonsblood coming out tomorrow, does Binary Code still have things to say or has the community outpaced their melodic, rich sound?
We’ve written recently about NJ progressive death metal outfit Binary Code and their upcoming sophomore album Moonsblood, which will be their first release in 6 years. Anyone who’s followed the band closely in the past few years knows that the long gap between releases was anything but intentional, but up until recently they’ve been almost completely mute about the causes of the delay. Shortly after Binary Code guitarist and songwriter Jesse Zuretti began dropping hints online that their new album would officially be coming this year, I asked to sit down with him and talk through what exactly happened, what got them to this place, and what fans can expect now.
It’s been a long, hard road for New Jersey progressive death metal group Binary Code. They released their first LP, Suspension of Disbelief, back in 2009 to warm reception and built on that momentum almost immediately with their 2010 Priest EP. Every indication seemed to be that they would follow that up with a sophomore LP a few years later. For a variety of reasons though things did not work out according to plan. I actually sat down with Binary Code guitarist and founder Jesse Zuretti recently to talk extensively about the obstacles and challenges the band have faced during that time, which will be coming out in the form of a neat little interview video sometime soon. In the meantime though, the band have gone ahead and finally announced their long-awaited second album, Moonsblood, and with it first single “Immersion.”
