Well this is quite a nice pick me up for the new year! Without a doubt one of my favorite bands in the entire spectrum of music, Converge, are set to begin recording their eighth full-length album, the tentatively titled All We Love We Leave Behind (as stated in Decibel magazine), which is the follow-up to their brain shattering album Axe To Fall. According to theprp, it was announced on New Year’s Day that the band had finished writing material for their newest album, and that they would be recording soon.

Guitarist/producer Kurt Ballou had this to say via his Facebook:

Busy month – currently mixing a Torche record their bassist, Jon recorded, then mixing a Frank Turner tune, then Converge practice, then more High on Fire recording and mixing, then Converge record! Woohoo!

Woohoo indeed. I kind of expected them to release a new album this year, but this definitely confirms it! The real question though, is it to early to start my best of 2012 list? Because this will surely be on it!

Converge: Live in Birmingham

Update: Marc Broussely of LoudPixels.net took some high quality video of the concert for your viewing pleasure. Make sure you check it out!

I’m in there somewhere too

This one I’ve been waiting for for a long, long time. I mentioned last week that Converge were one of the bands that made me heavy. Shamefully, in all this time, I’ve never seen them live – and it’s not for lack of presence. Two summers ago they passed through London twice – but I was indisposed being poor and jobless back home in the Midlands.

So when they announced their European tour in support of the phenomenal Axe to Fall, I made a (Broken) vow to catch them this time. “No problem,” I thinks, “I’ll definitely be in London this time!”

Then the night I went to book my tickets I get a call from the guy on the left in the picture above who looks like a duck (and he’s going to hate me for saying that if he ever reads this). “Hey Chris,” he says, “why don’t you come to the Birmingham show? Everyone from home is going!”

I could hardly say no. I mean for God’s sake, I met up with only three of the guys, but half the room was from my town.

But I get ahead of myself. I arrived a little to late to see openers Kvelertak, but was bang on time for a £4(!!) pint and the beginning of Gaza‘s set.

Converge are currently touring Europe in support of their most recent record, the phenomenal Axe To Fall. In fact, they hit the shores of the UK today with a show in Brighton, which I am told was amazing. No surprises there then.

Just announced, they will be selling a brand new, limited edition 7″ EP entitled On My Shield on this tour, featuring a brand-new A-side track On My Shield, with laser etching on the B-side. Lasers! Awesome.

The run will be limited to 3000 copies, divided into three different colours: 1000 for the tour, 1000 for the Deathwish e-store, and 1000 to be made available to vinyl retailers. The latter two of these will come with a free download card, so I guess the thing will hit the internet pretty soon after, but, and I quote the Convergecult official announcement, once these 7″EPs are gone, they are gone forever, so get your hands on a copy whilst you can.

I will probably be trying to get a copy when the tour rolls through Birmingham. That’s right Alabama, we’ve got one too, and ours was first!
