Accidental overdose.

As sad as this might be, this should be of no surprise to anyone. A 28 year old doesn’t die of natural causes that aren’t immediately visible during autopsy. Naturally, you’ll die when you take a bunch of drugs, but that doesn’t count as “natural causes”. The toxicology reports are in, and The Rolling Stone has the information:

Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan died on December 28, 2009 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs and alcohol, Orange County Deputy Coroner Mitchell Sigal told Rolling Stone. Toxicology reports indicate that Sullivan suffered “acute polydrug intoxication due to combined effects of Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Diazepam/Nordiazepam and ethanol.”

So, he took all of those pills and alcohol, which any drug user should know not to mix already, but judgment is impaired, so it’s easy to forget or care. Here’s the statement from the band’s management.

“To all of us who loved Jimmy, the only thing relevant about December 28 is that is the night we lost, too soon, a son, brother, friend and one of the most talented artists in the world,” the band’s manager Larry Jacobson tells Rolling Stone. “Every day, his parents and sisters, and his brothers in Avenged Sevenfold smile at the many memories they have of Jimmy and his fans around the world revel in the musical legacy he left them.”

I get what they’re trying to say, but I don’t like how it says that “the only thing relevant” is the fact that he died. No, this is very relevant, and this should call attention to the dangers of using these types of drugs recreationally. These drugs serve their purpose, and they aren’t for partying. If there is anyone else in Avenged Sevenfold using these drugs (which is likely), this should serve as a wake up call for them to put that shit down.

With that said, it’s always sad when someone dies young, and he will be missed by many. I’m sure he’s resting in peace. With all those downers, it’s hard not to.

And it is brought to us in the way of the Rockstar Uproar Festival. The rumored lineup for the inaugural tour was correct. Here’s the lineup:

Main Stage:

Disturbed
Avenged Sevenfold
Stone Sour
Halestorm

Second Stage:

HELLYEAH
Airbourne
Hail The Villain
New Medicine

I’d like to see Stone Sour and maybe catch Avenged Sevenfold to hear old material and check out how the drummer situation is going. Disturbed has a few good songs sprinkled in there. I’ve seen Halestorm live before, and while they weren’t bad, they weren’t exactly special (except for this).

And what do you know, it’s not coming to my area. I can’t say I’m disappointed. To find out if it’s coming to your area, check out the tour dates below:

Review: The Bled – Heat Fetish

The Bled (current line-up?)

I love me some damn catchy metalcore. Every Time I Die. Cancer Bats. Norma Jean on a good day. But we can always do with more of the good stuff to drown out the crap. I’m looking at you, Avenged Sevenfold.

Enter The Bled. Now I know what you’re thinking. “The Bled? Really? Surely, just another crappy metalcore band with nothing original and not a clue about how bored we all are with it.”

Wrong.

Now, it might sound like I’m writing about this band as if they were new, despite the fact that they’ve been around since 2001 and have released three albums prior to Heat Fetish. In fact I hear 2003′s Pass the Flask was pretty good. I’ll let you know.

The truth of the matter is that they all but are new; in fact they’re almost a tribute to themselves. Hard economic times forced founding members Ross Ott (guitar) and Mike Pedicone (drums), along with bassist Darren Simoes to quit or starve. Being the sensible chaps they clearly are, they chose their stomachs. I definitely would have done the same. View Full Article »

It’s certainly not news in the slightest that Avenged Sevenfold drummer Jimmy “The Rev” Sullivan passed away last month. Without a permanent drummer added to the lineup yet (if it ever happens), Avenged have decided to continue on and go into the studio. Who’s going to handle drumming duties?

None other than Dream Theater‘s Mike Portnoy.

Avenged Sevenfold posted the following bulletin on MySpace:

I want our fans to know that with Jimmy in our hearts, our journey to record has officially began. Jimmy helped leave this world an amazing gift and now it’s our job to make sure to deliver that gift to our fans. We asked Jimmy’s all time favorite drummer Mike Portnoy to record on behalf of him. Mike said it would be an honor and without question that’s what Jim would have wanted. Its comforting to us that someone like Mike, who is undoubtedly revered as one of the best drummers in the world, held such respect and adoration for the Rev’s abilities. Even though it will never be the same without our brother by our side, his essence lives in our hearts and through the music he helped create. He was a legend before any of the success or any of that bullshit and we are fucking excited to lay this down for our fans, and especially for Jimmy.

This move is a pretty big surprise, if you ask me. I didn’t think we’d hear from Avenged Sevenfold for a long time and now here they are with one of metal’s most prolific drummers. Maybe the prog influence will push A7X out of a corner and shake up their sound a little. One could always hope. I want to hear something other than pop country ballads, you know?

RIP James "The Rev" Sullivan

I haven’t been into Avenged Sevenfold for a while and I’m sure a lot of people in the metal community will bash them for going too mainstream, but it’s always a sad day when a young musician dies.

James Owen Sullivan, drummer of Avenged Sevenfold, was found dead in his home yesterday, December 28th, at 1 pm. The Orange County Coroner’s Office is investigating his death at the moment, but they’re saying he died of natural causes, which is a rather dubious claim, to say the least.

The Rev was 28, just missing out on joining the 27 Club, a group of musicians that died at age 27, including Jimi Hendrix and Curt Cobain.

And so, 2009 takes another one. Condolences to the band and their friends and family.
