BeyondTheShore-Ghostwatcher

Beyond the Shore are one of the few bands ever featured on this site that I’d refer to as almost-local. Sure, they live about 2.5 hours away in Lexington, but any band out of Kentucky or West Virginia signed to a well respected label like Metal Blade will get my recognition, since nationally touring metal acts from here are a rarity. Even with the decidedly Emmure-esque sound of their single ‘Homewrecker,’ like Victory Records’ like-minded Parisians As They Burn, Beyond the Shore flairs up the deathcore groove with more substance than you would likely expect through the course of their record Ghostwatcher.

On the surface, Parisians As They Burn could have been just another addition to the legion of bands who contribute nothing more to the music scene than a couple of breakdowns that would appeal to few beyond the Victory / Rise Records sort of fanbase that much of the die-hard metal fanbase finds alienating. In fact, had it not been for the recommendation from fellow countrymen and Heavy Blog favorites Betraying the Martyrs, this band could have personally been discarded. It just goes to show that some oft-repeated tropes ring true; don’t judge a book by its cover. Looking over nu-metal influences the band wears proudly on their shoulders, As They Burn manage to make the percussive grooving deathcore sound come across as a bit more thoughtful than much their contemporaries, landing themselves as a comfortable bridge between the gleefully ignorant swagger of Emmure and the intelligent furtherance of Meshuggah.

Believe it or not, France is steadily becoming a beacon for excellent metal, as evidenced by this year’s stellar debut releases from Uneven Structure and Betraying The Martyrs, the latter of which are currently embarking on their first ever tour in America, supporting Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, and Carnifex [show review here]. I caught up with Betraying the Martyrs bassist Valentin Hauser for an exclusive interview in which he discusses the origin of the band’s name and the troubles of getting a European band into America. I also make a fool of myself by pronouncing his name wrong. Luckily, Valentin is a great sport and a friendly dude!

Alright, so for everyone who doesn’t know, who are you and what do you do?

I am Valentin and I play bass for Betraying the Martyrs.

Oh! “Valentine!” I’ve been pronouncing it like “Valenteen” this whole time! [laughs]

Yeah, in French, “Valenteen” is a name for a girl…

Oh!

So please, don’t do so! [laughs]

I apologize! I am very American…

No problem!
