Tag Archive: Arsonists Get All The Girls

Apostate are a relatively new metalcore band from Prague, Czech Republic. They’ve been around since 2008, but their 2010 EP Seaborne really caught my eye, and it turned out to be my favorite EP from the year. Apparently they’re quite popular in the Czech Republic, having shared the stage with a few big names in the metalcore scene, including Heavy Blog favorite Arsonists Get All The Girls. They’ve also toured in Europe, and are gaining a lot of steam.

Anyway, they’ve released a (very short) teaser for their upcoming video, “Hermeneutic Circle“, which will be released on October 12th. Here’s the video:

Apostate Trailer 2 from Igor Bruso on Vimeo.

In the meantime you should go check out their songs from their Seaborne EP (which I would have given a 5/5 if I had reviewed it). Here’s my favorite one:

You can listen to the rest of it on their SoundCloud page, and catch a drum video for one of the songs after the jump if you’re interested (no vocals on the drum video)

They are doing a brand of metalcore that is really cool and they’re clearly good at their instruments and songwriting. If there’s any new band to keep an eye out on, these guys are definitely it.

You’d think that a metal blog reviewing the new Design the Skyline would simply be a practice in creative verbal abuse, but no, not today. I’d hate to admit it—mostly because it was just so damn fun—but maybe we as an entire internet community over-reacted a bit when we found out about Design the Skyline. Sure, that song “Surrounded By Silence” was hands down one of the worst things I’ve heard in a long time. That song was a terrible mish-mash of all things that was wrong with neon hair and tight pants from the BREE BREE breakdowns to the rave synths and autotune, and worst of all it wasn’t even arranged into anything that could be considered a coherent song. We all scoffed when word got out that they were going to be “proving the haters wrong,” as if there could be any meaningful improvement seen on the album. Turns out, it’s actually not as bad as all that, and I can’t fucking believe it.

Holy cow. The year is half over!

To be honest, I have no idea how ‘alternative’ my list is compared to my cohorts in heavy, as I avoided them like the plague in an effort to remain truthful with my list of favorite songs. It’s my website, dammit, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to change my list of favorite jams because I was beat to the punch! I’d imagine they aren’t much different though—you know what they say; “birds of a feather flock together.” So if there’s some huge overlap, then don’t hold that against me. You’re in our roost, after all.

These are in no particular order, as my main plan is to just flip through the iTunes cover flow and pick out stuff that catches my eye.

iwrestledabearonce are a band that everyone seems to love to hate. Quite the polarizing band, people get fairly passionate about them either way—but somehow I’ve managed to straddle the fence on them since their self-titled EP. I gave their debut album It’s All Happening a fair shake, and while I wasn’t exactly ‘feeling it,’ I didn’t think it was overly offensive or deserving of some of the hatred that it received. However, criticism where it’s due; the music was inconsistent, overly spastic, and vocalist Krysta Cameron seemed to have a problem singing in key. The whole affair felt sloppy, really, and as such I didn’t have high hopes for their followup Ruining it for Everybody—at first anyway.

I recently had the pleasure of attending the Return To The Motherland Tour, featuring Arsonists Get All The Girls, Lionheart, The Contortionist, and Volumes. The one band missing was A Plea For Purging, which I didn’t find myself too disappointed over at all since I never really did get into them.

Whilst this tour ended a while ago, it’s still relevant thanks to AGATG having just released their new album Motherland, which we enjoyed. Not only that, but the first two opening acts are part of the Summer Slaughter Survivor’s Tour this summer, which I’m completely stoked for as well.

The first act Volumes were awesome to watch live. They brought all the groove and heaviness I expected and did not disappoint. They played four of the five songs of their EP The Concept of Dreaming, which included “Wormholes”, ‘Through The Trees”, “Starstruck”, and “Intake”. As a side note, they ditched that last breakdown in Starstruck I complained about in my recent review which was a nice touch. One of the singers’ voice was raw. I can’t remember which one, but he shared the mic often with audience members to make up for his lack of ability to perform at 100%.

While I’ve shown my distaste for the Louisiana-based ‘spazzcore’ trolls in iwrestledabearonce, I’ve always had an open mind to them. There was a ton of hype surrounding their debut album It’s All Happening, and for some time they’ve piqued my interest. I mean, I love bands like Arsonists Get All The Girls and Genghis Tron, so why shouldn’t I enjoy iwrestledabearonce? For some reason, the album never really clicked with me. It was interesting at some points and grating in others, so I didn’t know what to do with myself.

So, obviously, I was interested when they made the bold claim that they would be jumping ship to black metal. I thought it was dubious at best, but I kept it on the back of my mind for the following days leading up to the premiere of their new song “Karate Nipples” over at Metalsucks. As expected, IWABO and Metalsucks just wanted to get everyone all wound up for no reason, which was a damn brilliant promotional strategy. In fact, within ten minutes of the track going live, Metalsucks briefly crashed. Apparently, nothing brings in traffic like unbridled elitist rage.

The song itself? Wouldn’t you know it, it wasn’t bad at all! In fact, I’d say “Karate Nipples” is the greatest thing they’ve done so far. Frontlady Krysta Cameron actually sings quite well instead of wailing obnoxiously, so it gets my vote of approval. You’ve got your technical and abrasive metalcore sound as per usual, but you’ve also got some weird funky disco section and a glitchy dubstep part in typical IWABO fashion—but for some reason this new song feels much more focused than anything else they’ve done. I’m actually very eager to hear what else these guys have got in store. I mean, if for some reason IWABO have always rubbed you raw and you get pissed off at the mere sight of them, “Karate Nipples” will do nothing to sway you. For those like me who were on the fence, it might just be worth a shot.

iwrestledabearonce’s sophomore album, Ruining It For Everybody, is due out July 26th on Century Media.

There’s still a reason to get excited about deathcore! This Californian band of progressive goofballs have made an evolution over the years from a jokester mentality and chaotic songwriting (an iwrestledabearonce before its time, as it were) to a more serious project with coherent songs with a sense of direction. After a would-be crippling lineup overhaul, AGATG released their third album Portals in 2009, becoming one of my favorite albums of the year. It would have taken home the gold too, had it not been for that pesky Between the Buried and Me, one of AGATG’s admitted influences. Do not discard this band simply because they have a silly name; they’re the highlight of an entire genre.

There’s a rumor gaining momentum around the nets that Canadian deathcore/metalcore band Structures are the newest signees for the tiny giant Sumerian Records. I’ve seen them around the web with the progressive deathcore tag, but there isn’t enough going on to capture my attention. The band have been gaining momentum over the last couple of years, touring with the likes of Periphery and Arsonists Get All The Girls, and while they hang with the right crowd that is conducive for the sort of music I’m likely to enjoy,  I’m not feeling them like I want to. It’s not that I think they’re particularly bad or anything—in fact, they’re much better than some of the other trite bullshit that has graced the label, like Asking Alexandria and I See Stars. At least with Structures, there’s a hint of progressive influence in their unpredictable song structure, which I can appreciate.

No disrespect to the dudes in Structures in the off chance anyone close to the band sees this; I’m stoked for the band getting signed and I’m glad their hard work paid off. They certainly don’t suck, but I’m not feeling them for the most part. I just feel like I can hear what they offer elsewhere with greater results. I can only assume Structures will have a release on Sumerian by the end of the year. Until then, I guess I’ll keep trying!

I now throw myself to the lions. What do you folks think about Sumerian’s latest addition?

Arsonists Get all The Girls are among the best of what deathcore & metalcore have to offer. If you aren’t familiar, they blend those styles with progressive overtones and quirky keyboards. I’m listening to their new album Motherland right now and so far, so good! It’s along the same lines as 2009′s Portals, which is a good thing. You can stream it over at Myspace.

Motherland is out May 17th on Century Media.

Well, here we are in the final week of the Scratchy Band Logo Awards. Hopefully you have enjoyed reading my thoughts. I definitely had an awesome time writing them down. Without further ado, here are the final five best logos.

5. FUCK THE FACTS

Fuck the Facts are my hometown heroes. I enjoy this logo for it’s symmetry and because it looks like a ransom note. It has a the vibe of a carnival that’s been hacked up by an axe murderer. I don’t have a lot to say about this one, but it pleases my eyes.
