An undertaking as ambitious as Alone speaks volumes of Evan Brewer‘s creativity, artistic strive, and talent. An album featuring nothing but bass guitar? It’s an interesting concept that I found to be quite intriguing when I first heard of Brewer’s solo project. I was skeptical that an entire album could be held together by just the sound of bass without any sort of percussion or accompaniment from other instruments. Admittedly, it takes some getting used to, but I think Evan Brewer is on to something here.

Unless I’m mistaken, a metal album in which a bassist takes the entire spotlight is a rarity. You have your surplus of shred albums that focus on guitar, but talented bassists are apparently not as ambitious with stretching their talents out over the course of an entire album. It’s about damn time someone made that happen!

Evan Brewer, currently of The Faceless and former bassist of the now defunct bands Animosity and Reflux, will be releasing his solo album on Sumerian Records. From the press release:

Brewer recently joined the Sumerian Record’s family as he was just announced as the new bass player for The Faceless, but Brewer will first showcase his impressive skills and songwriting prowess through his debut solo album, Alone, set for a June 28th release. This debut offering is a very progressive and unique release, and the first of its kind, as everything you hear on it was created with the bass. Brewer makes a bold statement with this release and undeniably proves that he is one of the genre’s most musically proficient bass players around today. The world hasn’t seen such a forward-thinking metal bass player since the Cliff Burton era.

Everything created with bass? Interesting concept. This has great potential, and I’ll be looking out for it. Here’s a taste of what to expect:

Alone is due out June 28th on Sumerian Records.

As if The Faceless couldn’t get any better, they recruit what has to be one of the greatest bassists of today: Evan Brewer.  For those who haven’t heard of him, you aren’t alone.  Before being relayed this information, I too was oblivious to his name.  Turns out he was the bassist for Tosin Abasi’s old band Reflux, as well as Animosity.  After discovering this, I searched YouTube for him – and I found him, alright.  Just watch:

And if that didn’t convince you:

Had to clean up the mess he just made cause your brain is blown? I know the feeling.

The new The Faceless record will no doubt be better because of the sick basslines he brings to the table, and my body is ready.

If you haven’t heard Fleshwrought‘s debut album Dementia/Dyslexia, then you are missing out on some of the best proggy tech death of the year. I thought it was amazing, and if you have any sense about you, you should at least find it enjoyable to some degree. One of the songs has a (midi?)  saxophone solo, for fuck’s sake. That’s awesome.

So now it looks like the two man project (featuring music by Navene Koperweis of Animosity/Animals As Leaders and vocals by Jonny Davey of Job For A Cowboy) is tossing around the idea of playing some shows, to which I say, “FUCK YES.”

As you can see in the above video, Navene kills it in the guitar parts while drummer Alex Rudinger pounds away, proving that the album was more than just some protools wizardry. This shit can be pulled off spotlessly.

More info to come when there’s something to report. Meanwhile, go listen to Dementia/Dyslexia — out now on Metal Blade — and bask in its glory.

Tech death is a bit of an iffy genre for me, as it tends to be filled with soulless wank under the guise of stellar musicianship. I let my opinion on the subject known in my Brain Drill review a few months ago, so I wont delve too much into that diatribe. Thankfully however, there are bands out there that know how to be technical and still produce something that’s both listenable and enjoyable, and new Metal Blade signing Fleshwrought are one of those bands.

Formerly known as Fleshrot, Fleshwrought consists of multi-istrumentalist Navene Kopperweis (ex-Animosity, Animals As Leaders) and vocalist Jonny Davey (Job For A Cowboy). Between the two and their musical escapades, a lot of hype and high expectations for their debut record, Dementia/Dyslexia, were built to an uncomfortably high level that lesser men would not have been able to live up to. However, every detail and note of the album’s 32 minutes were carefully crafted and re-examined before they were even signed, and this attention to detail returns on the investment.

Who would have thought that putting the vocalist of Job For A Cowboy and the drummer from Animosity in a room together and having them write an album would yield results this good?

Fleshwrought, featuring Navene Koperweis of Animosity and Animals as Leaders and Jonny Davy of Job For A Cowboy, have inked a deal with Metal Blade Records, releasing their debut album Dementia/Dyslexia on August 3rd. The music is along the same lines as The Faceless without sounding too similar.

You can get a taste over on their MySpace, where they’re streaming three songs from the album which, once again, comes out on August 3rd on Metal Blade Records. Check it out!

Bad news for fans who were wanting to see Decrepit Birth this year at California Metalfest: Decrepit Birth have parted ways with drummer KC Howard and guitarist Dan Eggers have left the band. Here’s the band’s official statement, via their MySpace page:

Drummer KC Howard and guitarist Dan Eggers have both decided to part ways with the band. We want thank them very much for the hard work. KC left the band right after the recording of the new album, to pursue his career as a fulltime music teacher. KC contributed since 2004 and has been an integral part of the band over the past years. Dan who joined in 2008, decided to part ways to due to personal career choices. We wish them the best of luck and success in whatever they do.

For live shows, we will be bringing in drummers Samus Paulicelli (Ex-Abigail Williams) and Lee Smith (Estradasphere) both helping us (separately) on various future tours.

As well, guitarist Chase Fraser (Animosity, Son of Aurelius) will bring his amazing guitar skills to the table.

This temporary reconstruction of the bands lineup has left us no choice but to cancel for the 4th annual California Metal fest. We apologize to all the fans that were looking forward to seeing Decrepit Birth at the CAMF this year. We will be back for the Summer Slaughter tour 2010 with a new lineup and ready to perform a new setlist featuring songs from our upcoming album Polarity which will be released 7/27 on Nuclear Blast Records.

Well this sucks, but it’s good that they’ll be able to make it out in time for Summer Slaughter. The musicians that they’ve enlisted to help out are also very capable at pulling this off. Hopefully Decrepit Birth are able to pull together full time members in the future.

As announced, their upcoming album Polarity will be out July 27th on Nuclear Blast Records.
