We love more than our fair share of tech-wizardry here at Heavy Blog. Animals as Leaders, Scale The Summit, and countless other shredntities and eponymous projects have captured our attention over the years. We’re suckers for instrumental music when it’s done right, plain and simple — but what makes or breaks an instrumental project? Tough question, and I’m glad you asked. Allow me to use The Francesco Artusato Project as an example of what not to do.

Today I would like to discuss a recent trend in the field of album artwork as it pertains to metal bands. When you think about the artwork of most metal albums, images of skulls, demons, fire and misogyny spring to mind. Metal is supposed to be evil and the artwork is supposed to reflect that right? In the past this was the case. Cliched imagery, was combined with a mono- or duo-chromatic colour palette to create something dark and unsettling. Blue implies coldness, red symbolizes fire, purple is alien, etc. A combination of sickly green and blue are used to startle and disgust the viewer. Of course there are exceptions to the rule but in the majority of cases, the design and execution of metal album artwork has followed strict, unwritten rules.

But things are different now. Metal musicians can have short hair, merch can be neon, and a genre called djent can exist and be taken seriously. So what does this mean for album artwork? Perhaps you have seen the signs already, noticed the changes, album art is no longer the one colour festival of evil that it used to be. Bands are embracing warm and varied colour palettes, comforting textures, landscape images and even sunshine! Gasp, you say! I’m not just talking about scene golems who have embraced all over print design like your nearest BAPE outlet (LOL at this image). I’m talking about bands that are lauded by critics and recognized as talented and original.

Let’s examine some evidence.

One of our favourite metal sites (besides ourselves, obviously), Lambgoat, have landed the premiere for Californian deathcore quintet All Shall Perish‘s new track ”Procession of Ashes“, which will feature on their upcoming album This Is Where It Ends.

We’ve got some division around the Heavy Blog campfire. Last summer, Jimmy named their 2008 album Awaken the Dreamers as the top reason why deathcore is actually redeemable, and not completely full of horseshit. There are elements of Awaken the Dreamers, but Jimmy and Pete aren’t too convinced I don’t think. I haven’t yet formed an opinion, but then again the genre isn’t particularly my bag, and I’m mostly filling a hole here whilst His Lordship holds ice to his face.

So; wha’tchoo lot think?

This Is Where It Ends is out Nuclear Blast on July 26th, and the band will be part of this summer’s Mayhem Fest (vague dates here thanks to Unearth).

I’m eagerly anticipating All That Perish‘s follow up to the spectacular Awaken the Dreamers, and so should you!  To keep us satiated, they’ve released a couple of updates so we can keep watch on their antics.

Despite the fact that there are no drums on this, it’s still pretty fucking hilarious.

Pretty awesome, right? Right! That solo Francesco Artusato does on that track is monstrous.  He had monstrous shoes to fill with Chris Storey’s departure, but it’s sounding like he can definitely handle it in it’s own right.

The new album This is Where it Ends releases July 26 in America and July 29 in Europe.  Prepare yourself.

California’s deathcore darlings All Shall Perish have revealed the artwork for their new album This Is Where It Ends. In keeping with the stylistic trend of the genre, the band hired Brent Elliot White, who previously did work for Whitechapel and Job For A Cowboy. Despite looking like the cover of some awesome video game, it’s pretty cool. Here’s the explanation of the visuals:

With this album we wanted to grab people’s attention, not only musically but visually. Lyrically, this album reflects a lot of our own personal struggles. The concept was to portray a man faced with the humiliation of his past and his continued suffering. Brent’s dark, vivid style fit perfectly in bringing this cover to life.

Awesome. The cover certainly looks the part, but I hope this new album is as good as their last album, 2008′s Awaken the Dreamers. We’ll see how it plays out July 26th when it hits stores via Nuclear Blast. You can listen to a cut from the new album, “Divine Illusion.”

[Part I | Part II]

We have again arrived on the negative side of scratchy band logos. Those who have stuck it out so far have seen some highs and some lows, experience emotions they’ve never felt before, and exercised muscles they didn’t know they had. Now we get into the really nitty-gritty. The worst of the worst. The creme de la creme of faux textures, distressed fonts and cheesy photoshop warp filters. Here are the worst scratchy band logos numbers 5 through 1.

5. ALL SHALL PERISH

This one is tough because I love All Shall Perish so much. However as I said to the kids I bullied in elementary school, I tease you because I want you to be better. Everyone knows that you should stay away from warp effects in photoshop. Unfortunately whoever created this textured monstrosity missed that memo. I’m not a fan of blackletter typefaces to begin with and the stretching and vectorization of this one did not lead to a pleasing result.

All Shall Perish have released a new song from their upcoming yet to be titled album. To listen to the track, you must go to their Facebook page and “Like” them (you don’t have to “Share”, contrary to what the picture says. Liars).

This is their first new track since founding member Chris Storey left, and it was my understanding that he was the one who wrote most of the songs. This new song isn’t like anything they’ve ever done before, it’s more of a straight modern deathcore song, without any of the slow-paced stuff from their most recent Awaken The Dreamers. This track feels more simplified and focused, just some aggressive riffs and breakdowns, like some tracks on The Price of Existence, but without the melody that made those tracks actually memorable. Of course, this is just one song, so we’ll see how it goes, but there are many other bands who do this kind of music, so I expect ASP to introduce some kind of new element, but without Chris Storey, who knows what they will do?

All Shall Perish recently topped Jimmy’s list of reasons why deathcore isn’t total shit. Seems now they’re in the shit.

The guys were involved in a crash over the weekend. They’re all unscathed, but their van has gone to the great scrapheap in the sky, leaving them stranded and unable to rejoin the Summer Slaughter tour, on which they were reportedly killing.

They’re currently working on a solution to rejoin in Denver on Friday, but in the meantime the group are seeking donations to help them get back on their feet. More info available over at their official Facebook. I’m sure they’d appreciate any help you can spare, even if it’s just buying a t-shirt.

EDIT: official reports state they’re back on the road – but they’re still gonna need a new van.

I don’t get to go to metal shows very often, so I have to pick and choose wisely. It seemed to me that Summer Slaughter’s stop fell on a Friday within a 4 hour distance and had arguably the best lineup, so that’s what I set my sights on. I was ready to have a good time, and all in all, I did.

However, things started off in the shitter. I was planning on and looking forward to interviewing The Red Chord’s Guy Kozowyk, but upon arriving at the box office I was turned away. Apparently, the guy at the ticket booth was not given any names under The Red Chord’s list, leaving me a bit confused, annoyed, and somewhat embarrassed. Seeing my genuine look of confusion, he offered to go and talk to the band and see what was up while I waited. After a few minutes had passed, he came back to tell me that there was too much going on backstage to get a hold of anyone and that it would be a good 20 minutes before he could reach anyone. I then noticed that people were being let in, so I said “I guess I’ll just buy a ticket and come back later,” and joined my friend (who had never heard of most of the bands on the bill) in line. Sadly, the shit didn’t stop there. Apparently it had hit the fan and sprayed all over the stage.

Inspired by GroverXIII of TNOTB’s series of posts regarding nu-metal, Heavy Blog Is Heavy will be counting down the top five reasons why the genre of deathcore isn’t totally full of shit. If you want to throw in your two cents and call me out on missing out a gem that this genre has to offer, mouth off in the comment section. If you thought this week was too much, just wait till next week when we give you Five Reasons Why Deathcore IS Total Shit. Enjoy!

So far…

#5. The Red Chord – Fed Through The Teeth Machine

#4. Arsonists Get All The Girls – Portals

#3. The Faceless – Akeldama

#2. Between The Buried And Me – The Silent Circus

This is it, the end of our countdown for the week, and I leave you with what I hold in regard as the best deathcore album ever.

Ever?

Yes. Ever. Stick with me here.

Back in 2008, All Shall Perish dropped what has since been held in regard as their opus, “Awaken The Dreamers.” Both melodic and technical (with a tiny bit of prog thrown in), this album is actually pretty epic in the grand scheme of things in its dark atmosphere and vibe. There’s some actual songwriting and superb musicianship being displayed here, in a place I once thought didn’t exist at the time of my first listen.
