We think pretty highly of Arsonists Get All The Girls, even going as far as to say that their 2009 album Portals is among one of the greatest albums in the deathcore genre. I personally thought the band had hit their stride and continued to rise, but following their 2011 album Motherland, their contract with Century Media expired and the band lost two members. These arsonists aren’t stopping though, instead announcing that their new lineup (featuring original vocalist Remi Rodberg) will release their upcoming album Listen to the Color independently via Bandcamp.

Here’s the press release, featuring band quotes and a tracklist for the new record:

Technical death metal is, admittedly, a rather demanding genre to be a part of. Even when disregarding the usual musical tropes such as song structure, melody, and memorability, the sheer instrumental virtuosity required makes for enough of a filter to wade off most aspiring musicians. Naturally, the real difficulty lies in not disregarding said tropes, rather incorporating them tastefully into the music while staying true to the foundations; but when even the “bad” bands that comprise the genre have to be, in a way, masters of their craft, it’s evident why very few actually reach the plateau of near-universal recognition and praise. Enter Oblivion, a Bay Area-based supergroup of sorts that, while still in their infancy  as a band, have a good deal of mileage within their individual careers.  Sporting members such as All Shall Perish founding member Ben Orum on bass, and music professor/award-winning composer Nick Vasallo on vocals, Oblivion certainly possess enough potential to join the pantheon of tech-death heavyweights even on their first release. But, does Called to Rise really see this potential come to fruition?

Howard Jones Killswitch Engage

Apparently Howard Jones isn’t completely out of the music game since he parted ways with Killswitch Engage. Our friend over at Rebel Pyro Management pointed out to us via Facebook that the former Killswitch vocalist has a new band with members from Devolved and All Shall Perish. This came to light after former Roadrunner A&R consultant and current artist manager at King Artist Management, Noisecreep contributor, and VP for A&R at Century Media Mike Gitter — who was a key player in getting Killswitch signed — left this detail in his ‘About Me’ section:

Progressive/experimental deathcore act Arsonists Get All The Girlswho released one of the greatest deathcore albums ever with 2009′s Portals — is hitting the studio to record their fifth album, but not without another shakeup in their ever-changing lineup. The 2013 iteration of the band sees the departure of vocalist Jared Monette and guitarist Arthur Alvarez, with no mention or statement made from anyone involved. However, it was announced that the band’s original vocalist Remi Rodberg had re-joined the group. The band hasn’t made much of a fuss about it either; a press release went out on Friday (below), but made no mention of it on Facebook and instead let pictures from the studio and a new promo photo (above) speak for themselves.

2013 marks a busy year for the Santa Cruz metallers ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS.  The band is currently in the studio with Zach Ohren (Animosity, All Shall Perish, Decrepit Birth, Light This City) working on their upcoming 5th full length, and the band has welcomed original vocalist Remi Rodberg back into the band full time.  Remi’s vocals can be heard on early ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS releases like Hits From The Bow and The Game Of Life, which were defining albums for the band and the genre itself.  With the new material, look out for a faster, heavier, crazier, yet extremely focused ARSONISTS GET ALL THE GIRLS as the band looks to return to their roots, with Remi Rodberg adding a key piece.

Now down to one guitarist and their original vocalist, expect the new record to mark a significant change in sound. We’ll see where it goes later this year when the album is released later this year. The band are apparently no longer on Century Media Records, so expect an announcement of a new label soon enough.

Ladies and gentlemen, time to start taking bets and making projections for this year’s Summer Slaughter Tour. Last year, we made a few educated guesses based off rumor and likelihood and more or less nailed a majority of the lineup long before it the best iteration of Summer Slaughter to date was even fully announced. This year, we’ve got a few names being thrown around thanks to the official Summer Slaughter Tour Facebook, and one possible lineup may include Children of Bodom, All Shall Perish, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Gojira, and The Ocean.

We didn’t just pull these names out of thin air, either. Summer Slaughter often throws out possible names to gauge reaction, and more often than not, those bands make it to the final lineup. One such band that could be seen with top billing in this year’s Summer Slaughter is The Dillinger Escape Plan, who were recently signed to Sumerian Records, a label that has a major stake in the tour. This yearly tour is starting to branch out to wider variety lineups — last year’s had something for everyone, having Periphery and Cannibal Corpse on the same bill which would have previously been unheard of in a non-festival —  so having a band rooted more in the realm of hardcore than death metal like previous top-billing bands would still make sense depending on how the rest of the show looks. They have a new album coming out this year as well, and will be in the market for a tour such as this that would put them in front of a large number of fresh faces. It’s perfect for everyone involved.

In a shocking turn of events, founding All Shall Perish member and guitarist Ben Orum has left the band. Here’s his explanation:

I have given over 10 years of my blood, sweat, and tears to pursuing my dream which you all have helped fulfill. Being in All Shall Perish has been the best experience in my life, outside of being a father. While I am deeply saddened by my decision to leave the band it is necessary at this point in my life. As you know I have a family and obligation to provide for them and be here. Unfortunately, I could not fulfill my duty as a touring musician any longer.

As big of a bummer this is (it’s hard to imagine All Shall Perish without Orum), it makes sense. Ben has a family to think about, and being on the road most of the year doesn’t afford enough time to spend with his children as they grow up. Apparently his children are excited over this turn of events, and I can imagine why. Huge respect there. Ben isn’t done with music though; he has taken up a position in the death metal band Oblivion as bassist:

While I am done with touring, I will never stop writing music. I am joining the extreme metal band OBLIVION as a bassist and contributing songwriter. OBLIVION’s debut album will be released on January 1st, 2013. We are beyond excited to unleash it onto the metal world. I’ve always been into death metal and extreme music, this is my return to a more traditional style of Death Metal. What makes OBLIVION unique and sets us apart from the pack is the fact that our primary songwriter is a world-renown classical composer and professor of music, Dr. Nick Vasallo. His voice gives the music a subtle refinement with the craftsmanship of the compositions.

I’ve known Nick since high school and we were in our first band together-ANTAGONY. Nick went on to college and became a classical composer. I went on to a successful career as a touring musician/songwriter in ASP. Now, 10 years later we are working together again. It’s a full circle. Nick has accepted an appointment as a tenure-track professor at a prestigious university and won’t be able to juggle all the hats of singing, composing, and playing bass for OBLIVION. So that’s where I come in–I’ll be fulfilling his duties as a bassist.

We also have another Dr. in the making, our guitarist Victor Dods is finishing his PhD in Math. The other guitarist, Ted O’Neil, is a veteran from the original thrash scene in 80′s, and our drummer, Luis Martinez, is a natural phenom. All of this plus me, makes us a huge force to be reckoned with. Stay tuned for the heaviest and darkest music out there. We are OBLIVION.

This is particularly exciting, as it turns out that Oblivion pretty much rules. Their debut album Called to Rise is available for pre-order now on Bandcamp, with select tracks available for streaming. This is a project worth keeping eyes and ears open for. Called To Rise is expected to see release January 1st, 2013.

Resident photographer Chris Collins did a photo shoot earlier this year to help promote his favorite band The Contortionist‘s new album Intrinsic. Check out his telling of the process and the complete photos below.

Flash back to April; Jimmy (Alkahest) was getting me on board to shoot the Dallas date of All Shall Perish‘s tour with support from The Contortionist (photos here). Being my favorite band, I was extremely excited to see The Contortionist for the first time. Jimmy asked if I’d be interested in pitching some ideas to them for some promotional shots and I was very eager to. So much so, money and payment was never a factor and was never discussed — I was just grateful for the opportunity.

Remember earlier this year when All Shall Perish fans were being sued for downloading the band’s latest album This Is Where It Ends on Bittorrent, resulting in a mess of confusion and the band publicly denouncing the lawsuits and the practice of suing music fans? Well as it turns out, Nuclear Blast was involved in the whole thing, and ultimately did the cool thing about it and dropped the suits when All Shall Perish fought back:

“Nuclear Blast and SKP Enforcement UG, who are experienced in tracking illegal downloads and the file sharing of music, recently decided to cooperate with World Digital Rights to fight against file sharing piracy in the USA. In the United States, the providers are obligated by law to hand out the IP addresses of the computers from which the downloads / file shares were generated. By collecting this information these companies are also acting in the interest of our artists, which is essential to the future of both our bands and the label.

To be able to recoup the investments both parties have made, is crucial in order to produce new music and to survive in this business. Nuclear Blast, SKP Enforcement, and World Digital Rights want people to be aware that the peer-to-peer file sharing is illegal and hurts the bands and record companies they love.

That said, Nuclear Blast also respects bands such as ALL SHALL PERISH that do not wish to pursue file sharers. ALL SHALL PERISH was not consulted about this course of action and did not wish to participate in it whatsoever. When they learned about it, they immediately asked us to cease all legal action against their fans, file traders or otherwise, as soon as they learned this action had been taken in their name. Therefore Nuclear Blast and World Digital Rights decided recently to stop legal actions against the file sharing with songs from the band ALL SHALL PERISH.

In all other cases, the parties involved pursue those violating copyright laws to avoid the financial loss they incur and to protect the value of their copyrights.

Nuclear Blast counts on the loyal fans which have been supporting the label and our bands for over 20 years now. Every sale helps support metal and the people that work hard to bring metal to the masses. For those that continue to buy music legally, that is something every loyal fan can be proud of.”

As much as it pains me to see a modern label dedicated to metal admit to being actively involved in the act of pursuing legal action against music fans (something which has lead to massive despise of the RIAA and mainstream music labels), it is incredibly awesome of them to respect the wishes of All Shall Perish and cease that activity. It’s a tired debate that I certainly won’t dive further into, but suing music fans is counter-productive and absolutely ridiculous, and it’s refreshing to see a band such as All Shall Perish openly agree.

Perhaps you should at least give All Shall Perish’s latest album This Is Where It Ends a cursory spin as a thank you for standing up for their fans. If you like it though, it wouldn’t hurt to spare a few dollars, surely?

HardRockLive showed up to the Sacramento stop of the All Shall Perish headlining tour and captured a multi-cam video of The Contortionist‘s set. As a massive fan of theirs who has yet to see them live, this footage was a God-send. Here’s the setlist with times for easy perusal:

Flourish (00:50)
Causality *new* (7:12)
Oscillator (11:44)
Dreaming Schematics *new* (17:19)
Vessel (22:44)

Be on the look out for new information regarding The Contortionist’s upcoming album. Should be some details in the coming weeks!
