Last week, the polarizing experimental metalcore group iwrestledabearonce revealed new details surrounding their upcoming third record Late For Nothing, including the tracklist, release date, and confirmed a guest solo featuring guitarist Steve Vai. The band promised a new single and quickly delivered with the album’s opening track, ‘Thunder Chunky.’

The Tim Lambesis murder for hire case has been the biggest bit of metal news all year. We’re all aware of it and the developments that happened over the last month. When you cut through all the disappointments and gossip, at the core of all the fan outrage and worry was whether or not the Austrian Death Machine IndieGoGo campaign was intended to help pay for the murder of his ex-wife and if backers were ever going to see a return on their donation as promised. Fans can now put those worries at rest, because the new Austrian Death Machine album Triple Brutal is still happening.

Around these parts, we have a soft spot for our friend Jak Noble and his project Returning We Hear The Larks. His 2010 EP Proud England remains as one of my personal favorite djent releases, and it feels it’s been forever waiting on a follow-up. Luckily, there’s finally a full-length album coming up in the form of Far-Stepper/Of Wide Sea, and a first single from the album has been made available.

So we’re really late on this, I know, but letlive. has a new single out titled ‘Banshee (Ghost Fame)‘, and it kicks faces in. It’s super catchy and that chorus will stay with you until the group’s new record The Blackest Beautiful drops July 9th via Epitaph Records.

Revocation are one of the most exciting bands around these days — this is evident and smart people agree. They rose up in the sudden wave of ‘thrash revival’ a while back and have maintained their niche by creating thrash that has all the intensity of a death metal band and incorporates guitar solos that are would be at home amongst the repertoire of any of those 80′s ‘guitar gods’. Their upcoming self-titled album is sure to be killer if their past material is anything to go by and it’s quite obviously one of my most anticipated albums of the year. So, in anticipation, here is 30 whole seconds of brand new, never heard before, straight out of the box, fresh as a daisy, mint condition Revocation material:

UK’s up and coming progressive masterminds The Safety Fire announced their upcoming sophomore album, titled Mouth of Swords, just last week. Now they revealed the snazzy album artwork (above) and released a new song titled ‘Red Hatchet’! Just as you’d expect, the song is amazing — it’s a supercharged version of all that made Grind the Ocean so good. Check out the song and the track listing after the jump.

I was late to the Panopticon party, only recently getting into the genre-bending 2012 opus Kentucky, which melded bluegrass and atmospheric black metal. Seemed like an odd premise to me at first. Considering I despise most bluegrass and black metal is a hit or miss genre for me, so combining both of them seemed like a dubious prospect to me, even though I felt like the idea was worth exploring. Turns out it works quite well, and I’m loving Kentucky. It’s great to know that a band out of my home state is actually pushing music forward.
On top of Kentucky, Panopticon’s new split with Vestiges has been making rounds on our playlists. I reviewed the split recently, and I recommend it as one of the year’s highlights so far. Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer for even more new Panopticon material, as it was just announced that a yet another split EP was in the works, this time with Maine’s folk/black metal act Falls of Rauros.

Influential progressive metal group Extol have excited us ever since they teased their reunion last year. Now, their long-awaited new studio album Extol — their first in ~8 years — is just on the horizon, June 25th in North America through Facedown Records. We’ve already gotten a glimpse of the new material, but today brings another new song in the way of the music video, ‘A Gift Beyond Human Reach.’

Summer is basically upon us, well at least it is here, but I’ve been wondering what sort of albums will act as the soundtrack for the days where the sun actually manages to show itself. Beyond more obvious contenders like the new Scale The Summit effort and the latest Coheed And Cambria album, I’m putting my money on the upcoming debut from Palms, which, if somehow you’ve managed to avoid this fact thus far, is comprised of members of both Deftones and Isis and creates some of the most lush and beautiful post-rock you’ll hear all year.
The band have been teasing material for a long time now, but most recently debuted the album opener on the Radio 1 over here in the UK. It didn’t take long for it to get uploaded to internet thankfully, so you can listen to it below:
