One post about Cormorant today isn’t enough, as this band deserves some recognition.

There’s some heated comment-voting wars between fans of Cormorant and much less interesting band called A Walk With The Wicked. Cormorant are the obvious choice on the matter of unsigned talent. However, some people don’t think so and AWWTW are getting pretty close to winning from what I can tell; it’s gonna be close. So, leave a vote over at Ultimate-Guitar by commenting with simply “Cormorant.” Flame some mouthbreathers if you want (0ne dude said Cormorant fans were fat neckbeards) but that won’t help our cause much.

Props to Alex_P of TNOTB for prompting me to post this.

… so what’s on everyone’s favorites for this year so far? We’re almost at November I figured I could do with some new music that could modify my list (and maybe yours too). I’m most definitely missing a few gems. Throw your top 5 in the comments (or more if you want) and let’s get some recommendations going!

In no order, mine is shaping up to be:

The Tony Danza Tapdance ExtravaganzaDanza III: A Series of Unfortunate Events

Decrepit BirthPolarity

Solution .45For Aeon’s Past

The AbsenceEnemy Unbound

The 25th Hour - Monsters

Special mention to Piotrek GruszkaCosmogenesis. If that album gets stuck any more in my head I can’t imagine it not making my final list.

Let’s see what you guys got!

As far as 8-string wielding bands go, After The Burial sit pretty far up there in my favorites. I was very pleased to find out earlier that their new album will be called In Dreams and will be released on November 23 via Sumerian Records. That’s a lot earlier than I was expecting it to come out, all things considered, but I’m not complaining! Get stoked, and in the meantime see if you can catch the band on tour; they are touring pretty much non-stop until the end of the year!

A Metal Homecoming

I refused to put pictures of an actual homecoming, but this is basically what it looks like.

I am going to my first school dance tonight. It’s not because I’m a freshman in high school, I have just found a way to avoid every dance up to this point but EmocoreGF (I’m trying to teach her) comes with contract restrictions. Trust me, I don’t mind being with her, I’m going to make it fun no matter what, I just know exactly what type of music they are playing. The playlist will consist of rap, dance, maybe a country song, and then the classic “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” by Green Day. This is really the only thing I’m not stoked about tonight. But this got me thinking of a world that was run by metalheads, like the world that Dethklok lives within, and what their playlist for a homecoming dance would be. And so, here are the top songs I would want to hear at a homecoming dance and the order I would play them in.

Brutal Wimminz

Every once in a while women defy physics and so something right. How they got out of the kitchen, I don’t know but in these instances good for them. I’ll start off with some favorites.

At The Throne Of Fudgement

It’s been a while since we’ve had any news from Cincinnati, Ohio’s At The Throne Of Judgment (or ‘The Fudge’ as they sometimes like to call themselves). One of the few bands on Rise Records that I don’t despise, their debut album The Arcanum Order came out back in ’07 and while I’m not really into metalcore and deathcore styled stuff as much as I used to be, I still find myself listening to and enjoying this technical and melodic album. Check out one of my favorite tracks Martyrdom; Ruin Of Gaia below to see what I’m talking about:

Some of my favorite aspects of the album are the vocals, the guitar tone, and the excellent solos. If you like that song then be sure to check out the rest of the album because it’s all great.

The band broke up for a while and then announced that they were getting back together and releasing a new album titled Twilight Kings as you can see on their myspace page. They even posted a demo track from the album last year but they’ve been pretty quite since then. Here’s to hoping that they get their act together and release some new music in the future!

Shout out to reader and OCTILLIAN guitarist Octobuss for being subtle about linking us his band through his name in the comments. I’m glad I randomly decided to start clicking things!

Are you the type of person who enjoys long metal songs that flow throughout several genres? You know you are. Everyone likes to hear a random latin guitar solo (complete with authentic percussion) followed by some funk. OCTILLIAN are the band that does just that. There’s also post-rock atmospheres and general experimentation with the music, never being all too consistent in their sound. In this case, it’s a cool thing.

Check out OCTILLIAN via Myspace and get lost in a soundscape or two.

I Summon You! The Readers!

Music production. Where do you start? How does one go about being a record producer? Are there schools that one can go to that don’t have ridiculous tuition costs? Do you learn it yourself then contact people in the music biz?

If anyone knows anything about music production as a career, please share!
