Category: Tours and Rumors of Tours

While I am BEYOND EXCITED for Summer Slaughter Tour this year, some metal fans out there aren’t too keen on the likes of Periphery, Veil of Maya, etc. Understandable, I suppose; we all have our tastes and there’s nothing wrong with that so long as you’re not an asshole about it. For those waiting for a more underground package tour to come to fruition, you’re in luck, because Southern Lord’s putting something together.

Here’s the scoop from the press release:

Southern Lord this week confirms a devastating label tour package for this June and July, bringing some of the label’s newest and most promising acts as well as some major players on the eclectic but lethal roster together for a near month-long trek across the face of America.

Organized and booked by Southern Lord founder Greg Anderson, the core acts for the tour include the Ontario-based hardcore/rock outfit BURNING LOVE (featuring ex-Cursed vocalist), the dark lords of Swedish crust MARTYRDOD making their debut U.S. appearance, Milwaukee’s punk/hardcore crossover outfit ENABLER and Seattle’s powerhouse d-beat/death-infused hardcore bastards BLACK BREATH. Special additional performances from POISON IDEA, NOOTHGRUSH, PELICAN, POWERTRIP, WILD/TRIBE, DEAD IN THE DIRT, THE SECRET, ALL PIGS MUST DIE and more will join some of the shows regionally as well.

The final routing is still being plotted and finalized, and a fully confirmed itinerary will be publicized in the next two weeks as it all takes shape.

So there you go, hardcore fans! Dates are to be announced soon, and we’ll fill you in when they’re available.

The world already knows how much I’m in love with Between the Buried and Me, so I’m just gonna skip all the foreplay and dive right on into the news. BTBAM have announced a European tour with Periphery and The Safety Fire, set for this Fall. Here are the dates:

10/10 Antwerp, BEL – Trix (without Periphery)
10/11 Amsterdam, NET – Melkweg
10/12 Koln, GER – Luxor
10/13 Munster, GER – Sputnikhalle
10/14 Copenhagen, DEN – Vega
10/16 Stockholm, SWE – Debaser Slussen
10/17 Gothenburg, SWE – Sticky Fingers
10/18 Hamburg, GER – Logo
10/19 Berlin, GER – Lido
10/20 Prague, CZE – Rock Cafe
10/22 Bratislava, SLO – Randall Club
10/23 Budapest, HUN – Durer Kert
10/24 Wien, AUT – Szene
10/25 Munchen, GER – Backstage
10/27 Novara, ITA – Rock’n’Roll Arena
10/28 Zurich, SWI – Dynamo
10/29 Stuttgart, GER – Universum
10/30 Frankfurt, GER – Batschkapp
10/31 Paris, FRA – La Maroquinerie

It should be a really cool tour, and coincides with the release of their new album, so you silly Europeans will get to hear the new songs live first. Lucky devils; hopefully America will get a little something during Summer Slaughter! Speaking of the new album, bassist Dan Briggs was recently interviewed by AbsolutePunk for the upcoming Trioscapes debut, and was asked about the new BTBAM album. To cut to the good stuff for you guys, here’s what we’ve learned:

  • Writing is done!
  • They’ll back to working with Jamie King from May 14, recording for five-six weeks. Even longer for mixing.
  • Dan describes the album as, “[not having] much in common soundwise with Parallax. It’s pretty fucking out there.”
  • It’s more cohesive between songs as a solid piece of music, even moreso than Colors.
  • It will be out this Fall.

If the thought of a BTBAM concept album that’s even more cohesive between songs than Colors doesn’t get you excited, check your pulse. I’m obviously biased, but no other album on the horizon is as exciting as this. Keep your eyes out for Parallax II, out this Fall on Metal Blade.

Texas instrumental act Scale the Summit were one of those bands that I never expected to change much in terms of lineup, but apparently it just happened. Bassist Jordan Eberhardt decided to leave the band. Says guitarist Chris Letchford:

“We are also proud to announce Mark Michell (Tetrafusion) as our new full time bassist. Jordan decided earlier in the year he no longer wanted to tour full time so we have decided to part ways. We have had great luck having all original members for the past 3 full lengths and over 6 years! We wish him the best and are really excited to see what Mark brings to the band!”

Any band shakeup has clear potential for bad news, but before you get too upset, you should check out his replacement: Mark Mitchell of Tetrafusion.

So clearly, Scale the Summit’s low end is in more than capable hands. I ain’t even mad.

On top of this news, the band has announced their second headlining tour for this year, Adventure Metal Across America, alongside Today I Caught The Plague. I had always sort of referred to Scale The Summit as adventure music (I spent hours on World of Warcraft and Minecraft to their tunes when I had more time to play games), so it’s a fitting tour name as any. Good to see them embracing their adventure metal spirit! Dates for the trek are available after the jump!

The excitement for the Death tribute/reunion benefit tour is ramping up, as Atheist are now set to open the show at select dates! This pairing makes so much sense; Death and Atheist are cut from the same cloth in the Florida death metal scene, being highly influential to not only death metal, but extreme prog.

Here’s what Atheist frontman Kelly Shaefer had to say:

“We could not be more honored to be direct support on the upcoming Death To All Tour! It’s gonna be a blast to gather with all our old and dear friends form the early days of extreme metal, and also to help celebrate the music from the godfather of Death metal, Chuck Schuldiner.

Any fan of Death/extreme metal, I’m telling you now, sell everything to attend one or more of these shows. It’s going to be legendary and you can bet on that! We will be doing the Orlando, Atlanta and Dallas shows, so we hope to see all the Southern metal-heads out in force.

Thanks to Anton and the organizers for asking us to be a part of this monumental moment in extreme metal history! See you all there!”

Atheist are the second band announced to be opening the tour, with Gorguts announced as opening select dates as well. Here are the dates:

With Gorguts:

06/22 San Francisco, CA – The Regency Ballroom
06/23 West Hollywood, CA – House Of Blues
06/26 Chicago, IL – House Of Blues
06/28 New York, NY – Irving Plaza

With Atheist:

06/30 Orlando, FL – The Beacham
07/01 Atlanta, GA – The Masquerade
07/03 Dallas, TX – House Of Blues

This is some exciting news! If you can’t make it out to one of these shows, you can be sure to live vicariously through the words of resident Death expert Noyan, who will be hitting up the New York date. For more information, visit DeathToAll.info.

Proving that America is once again behind the times when it comes to heavy music festivals, The PRP is reporting rumors that the next half of bro-tastic energy drink treks is going to be full of leftover nu-metal and radio rock — or as I like to collectively refer to it, buttrock. Here’s the rumor:

Shinedown
Godsmack
Staind
Buckcherry
P.O.D.
Papa Roach

Oh well. It’s not like anyone could have expected this to be any different. I mean, it’s a step down from last year’s headliners Avenged Sevenfold, but not by much. At least we still have Summer Slaughter.

Before we get to our actual news post, I’d like to announce that I am going to the NYC show of the Death to All tour as a VIP, to cover the event for Heavy Blog. I didn’t doubt for a second whether the VIP ticket was worth the price, but SickDrummer.com (the organizers of the tour) are making sure that I earn more than enough value for my money.

How, you ask? Well, yesterday they announced that legendary Canadian tech death/avant-garde innovators Gorguts have been added to the tour (all dates except Orlando). If you’re unfamiliar with them, Gorguts the brainchild of singer/guitarist/mastermind Luc Lemay, and they’ve been at this since 1989! If you’re unsure about how significant these guys are, let me put it like this: You know how awesome Obscura is? Well, they’re named after a Gorguts album. And the new Spawn of Possession album, which I consider to be a masterpiece, is heavily influenced by Gorguts too. Anyway, here’s what Luc Lemay had to say about all this:

“Back in ’86-’87, I was already a fan of the genre with POSSESSED’s ‘Seven Churches’, CELTIC FROST’s ’Morbid Tales’ and HELLHAMMER’s'Apocalyptic Raids’. But the day I put my hand on DEATH’s ’Scream Bloody Gore’ cassette tape, my life changed. All I wanted was to become a guitar player, playing death metal and singing with a raw, evil and brutal voice like Chuck.

“So here I am, twenty five years later, as passionate as day one. Being on stage paying homage to this amazingly visionary and creative artist, Chuck Schuldiner. In my heart I see him as important as any composer of the 20th and 21st centuries. He created a language and a musical esthetic that will never be forgotten.”

If you haven’t gotten your tickets yet, I forgive you, because you can go and buy them right now here. Also, here’s some more information on the tour if you’re still not sold somehow.

I am so envious of those who live in the UK right now. Coming their way this summer is the UK Tech-Fest 2012, which showcases the best up and coming tech/prog bands in the scene. It’ll take place July 13-15th in Alton, UK. The lineup was just announced, and it looks spectacular. You can read the poster above (I ain’t typing all of this out — sorry) and be amazed at the quality of acts on this bill. Hopefully they make this a tradition so I can make it out next year; I’m sure our current co-editor Chris Disinformasiya would put me up (right, buddy!?).

Check out UK Tech Metal Fest on Facebook for more information.

Since it’s a dreadfully slow news day, I thought I’d let you guys know that Alcest and Deafheaven will be at The Hideaway in Johnson City, TN tomorrow, where Gunnar (DeusExMachina) and I will be hanging out and enjoying the show. Is there anyone else hitting this show up tomorrow? Let us know so we can keep an eye out for you!

If you’re in the area and for some reason don’t know what Alcest are all about, here’s the brilliant video for ‘Autre Temps.’

As soon as we were told that there would be an array of prolific musicians teaming up for a Death tribute tour, we were crossing our fingers that Obscura vocalist Steffen Kummerer would be given a shot at vocal duties, as no one else would be better fill-in for Chuck Schuldiner. Both Kummerer’s guitar playing and vocal style are influenced by Chuck, so it’s cool to see a direct lineage of sorts paying homage! Kummer is the second vocalist added the lineup, following yesterday’s announcement that Abysmal Dawn‘s Charles Elliot will be handling vocal duties as well.

Here’s what Kummerer had to say:

“It was a pleasure to get the invitation to play all of those timeless classics as a tribute to Chuck and his work. To be honest, I wasn’t sure if it was a good idea at all to get this project running, due to my respect for the past. The band DEATH is gone and will never come back; that is the truth. These shows are a nice way to show tribute to the band and their previous work and help musicians via Sweet Relief. In the end, a good thing and definitely worth visiting one or two shows. I am glad to be involved and be part of this idea to bring this music back on stage. Let the metal flow.”

The dates and lineup are available after the jump. For more information, visit Death To All’s official site.

While they weren’t my first choice, I’m excited that Cerebral Bore have won the fan-voting contest to open Summer Slaughter Tour 2012. This makes them the first band with a female vocalist to ever be on the tour. Awesome! That just makes the lineup that much more exciting! Congratulations go out to those guys, as they deserve it. Let’s hope they get the visas sorted this time!

For those who haven’t been keeping track, here’s the lineup as it stands as of 3/22:

Cannibal Corpse
Between the Buried and Me
The Faceless
Periphery
Job For A Cowboy
Veil of Maya
Goatwhore
Exhumed
????? [likely Fleshgod Apocalypse]
Cerebral Bore

This is likely the best tour you’ll see this year in America. EVERY BAND is killer. I cannot wait for the dates to be announced. We’ll relay those to you as they come in!
