I have no idea why, but Periphery singer Spencer Sotelo has gathered with a few friends to cover Slipknot‘s classic ‘The Heretic Anthem’.

Alright people…. As promised, I give you THE HERETIC ANTHEM. Taylor Larson on guitars, Will Donnelly on bass, Misha Mansoor and Matt Hellporn on drums and myself on vocals. Enjoy fuckers! -Spencer

I used to listen to this song all the time during 6th grade, so I’m intimately familiar with it, and Spencer absolutely nails it. He captures all the anger and nuances of Corey Taylor‘s voice. I wasn’t expecting much, but this is definitely insane. I hope Spencer sounds this vicious on the upcoming Periphery album too!

I’m definitely no authority on country. Not. At. All. I do like it though. I can appreciate the musicianship and emotion in some cases. Johnny Cash is always welcome on my playlist and I don’t have many qualms with the Dixie Chicks, considering they play the shit out of their instruments. I’M NOT EVEN ASHAMED! Anyways there is my acceptance of country and then fact that I enjoy a lot of folk music like Bob Dylan and Ray Lamontagne. Despite all of this deviation from ‘heavy’, Protest the Hero‘s Rody Walker and Arif Mirabdolbaghi have started a country themed side project going under the moniker of ‘Refugees‘. I’m a huge fan of Rody so I think it’s really cool to hear him lend his voice to different styles of music. You can actually hear some of their recorded work. It’s good if you can bear country. I doubt many of you will be interested but there are definitely worse side projects out there. At least it isn’t dubstep, amirite?

In case you we’re wondering, here is a statement from Rody giving us a little bit more info about the project.

“These are just some songs I’ve been writing. Certainly the style deviates quite drastically from Protest The Hero but I’m having a lot of fun writing the songs, and I hope it’s a little fun for you to listen to.

Two of the songs currently were recorded by Cameron Mclellen and the other two were recorded separately by Arif and myself. Arif contributes the Bass, banjo, lead guitar and some harmonies, while I play the rhythm guitar, and the harmonica (quite horribly might I add).

I haven’t figured out exactly what my plan is, but I’m open to suggestions…” [via: The PRP]

Rody has posted the 4 tracks on his soundcloud, so go give ‘em a listen!

So, The Dillinger Escape Plan just released a new video for their track ‘Parasitic Twins‘ and I’m both completely confused and pretty uncomfortable. Take a look for yourself:

Normally Dillinger videos are pretty cool, but I’m not sure about this one. It could be one of the more awkward and unfitting music videos I’ve seen, basically amounting to “we’ve got some merch being made and stuff, but also there’s some romance.” Right on, man. I guess?

Woah, I didn’t really see this coming. After a great year and critical acclaim for their latest album The Discovery, Born of Osiris apparently fired their guitarist Jason Richardson.

To all of our fans and followers, we have decided to part ways with guitarist Jason Richardson. This was something that just needed to happen. We will be a more creative, energized, and focused unit as a result. The past year was the band’s most successful and we owe it all to our amazing fans. We promise everyone that 2012 will see us take further steps to bringing every aspect of our band to a new level. We couldn’t possibly be more excited for what the future holds.

Also, since the finishing touches were put on The Discovery we’ve already been in the process of writing our next album. The past month and next two we will be home writing and finalizing the record that will be released this summer/fall.

Big news coming soon regarding our summer touring schedule, we can’t wait to see all of you again soon with some new music to play for you!

On top of the split, Richardson has recently joined Chelsea Grin as a fill-in guitarist. Richardson is no stranger to band hopping, either; after replacing Chris Storey in All Shall Perish in 2009, he quit the next year to join BoO. I’m also a bit surprised that they already have another record preparing for release this year. Was the greatness of The Discovery due to Richardson joining or was it the direction the band were already heading?

Jason seems to think it’s the former. Not long after the announcement of the split, Jason gave his side of the story:

Just to clarify to everyone I did NOT quit Born of Osiris, I would have never been able to bring myself to do such a thing no matter how much tension was between us. All of those dudes were essentially my family, I lived in the same house as them for over 2 years. This was by no means at all my decision(not that I was involved in the decision in any way shape or form lol). I have been fired from the band because I, “don’t agree with the way they want to live their lives” and “it felt like their dad was in the band.” So instead of confronting me about my eeeendless bitching about their excessive drinking and assorted drug abuse they decided that calling me at 130 in the morning 4 days before christmas while I’m home visiting family to tell me that all of my belongings from the new BOO house were in my trailer on the way to me in VA was the professional way to handle it. So i can say with pride that I will NEVER play another note on stage with the group of cowards that is Born of Osiris. I don’t give a fuck what they think of me for putting their personal stuff out there, I want everyone to see them for who they really are. Im just happy the truth finally came out and now I know what truly matters to them and it is NOT putting out albums like The Discovery.

This has got to be the most awesome and bewildering photoshoot I’ve ever seen. Photographer Tim Tronckoe deserves a pat on the back from the universe for coming up with something so surreal and absolutely random. See more of the photoshoot on Trivium’s Facebook.

The bands played together at the beginning of December last year along with In Flames in a short seven date run around the UK.

Air Guitar Just Became Cool Again

Everyone’s favorite up and coming stoned rockers Red Fang recently filmed a music video for their song “Hank Is Dead,” where there was apparently a kickass air guitar competition. The band released the above footage from the video shoot, which looks like a hell of a time. Check out that dude’s intense performance! Someone get him in a band ASAP.

The full video for “Hank Is Dead” should make its way online sometime in the next month or so, but you can get their latest album Murder the Mountains right now on Relapse Records.

Devin Townsend Project Remixes

For those who are unaware, Devin Townsend recently released his four part magnum opus, The Devin Townsend Project, in a limited run boxset entitled Contain Us. Among the various goodies of bonus tracks, unreleased demos, and promo videos inside this massive set was the audio stems for two songs; “Bend It Like Bender” from 2009′s Addicted, and “Juular” from Deconstruction, which was released earlier this year.

From these stems, creative Devy fans have taken upon themselves to remix, and remaster the songs in various ways. One of my favorite so far is the wacky “country” remix of “Juular”.

There are many other remixes and redux of Townsend songs out there, and quite a few of them are compiled in a thread on the official HevyDevy forums. So go sign up, and enjoy some awesome fan created content.

I normally complain too much about having to make day-long journeys in order to see a decent metal show. I didn’t take into account the few local shows we get in Pikeville, because I seldom actually go to them; I like metal, not country and buttrock. We did, however, get the vaguely metal Buried Alive tour, featuring the all-too stellar lineup of Avenged Sevenfold, Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead, and Black Veil Brides. I didn’t go to this show either, obviously. Apparently I’d rather spend a day of lost pay on the road with my money tied up in gas and hotel costs than go see this show, where I had passed the line to get in several times that very day. I’m weird like that, I guess. It sounds pretty stupid on paper, but it is what it is.

So, while in my hometown of Pikeville, KY, Avenged Sevenfold had apparently caught some of the stage on fire because someone couldn’t do their job correctly. As the pyrotechnics went off, their banner caught on fire, which forced them to stop the show until it could be put out. Apparently it was during this intermission when the crowd stopped to reflect on the show they had witnessed up to that point and realize that they were in a building where the aforementioned bands had actually performed, and just couldn’t bare to live with themselves any longer. The crowd had soon turned on Avenged Sevenfold, chanting in an amusing collective rural accent, “burn it down!”

M. Shadows pleaded with the crowd, saying, “if we burned it down, you’d go with it!” The crowd then cheers, letting their desires of death by fire being known. An honor killing if there ever was one. I mean, why else would they demand that the stage, and potentially the building, be burned down while they’re still in it? Surely they aren’t just fucking stupid? Right?

It seems we’re running themes over through posts today; this time we continue the black metal bit with episode five of Vegan Black Metal Chef, who we’ve featured a couple of times before, but it seems we missed a couple of entries (catch them here).

When I first watched this video there was a guy picking winter vegetables from a frostbitten garden. It took a few seconds to register that this was a Waitrose advert, but it seemed oddly appropriate. I was a little worried about a vegetable smoothie at first, but never fear.

It seems that our loveable (??) VBMC is growing more into his role, with the theatrics and production values THROUGH THE ROOF!

I’ve yet to try any of his recipes, as tofu isn’t something I generally keep around the house, but would be interested to hear anyone who has.

Slayer’s Totally Super Cereal Rider

If anyone can draw a direct link between all twenty-five items (twenty-four if you’re being picky) then we will give you any one of them. Even the skull; you can choose one of our underlings to sacrifice.

Also I like the hugs and kisses at the end. Nice touch.
