It seems that my newest musical obsession lies in post-black metal. You take black metal and you throw in more ambient atmospheres, melody, experimentation, and progression, and you have something incredibly awesome. Alcest, Lantlos, Amesoeurs (all of whom share Niege in some capacity), Wolves in the Throne Room, and Agalloch… all awesome. Even with my intrigue in this genre though, I still can’t get into much traditional black metal. It’s the craziest thing.

Well last week I got an email from one George C from the post-black metal band Deafheaven. The band has put out their demo for a 10 cent download (completely worth it, you damn cheapskates) on bandcamp. Feast your ears on this awesome piece of work:

It’s really fantastic, and inspiring. Upon hearing Deafheaven’s demo, I’m reminded that I need to continue work on my own musical project I’m steadily working on which takes a strong influence from the genre called Theologiae, through which I released the first song “The Ardor Sanctus,” which features a solo by Tre Watson. Give that a stream below (free download when you click through to bandcamp) and tell me what you think! And yes, the drums need some work.

So this I request of you, the readers: given my enjoyment of the above mentioned bands, what other blackened metallers should I turn my attention to. Also, any criticisms on my Theologiae project are welcome! I’m also open to bringing other people into the fold, so if you want to collaborate, let me know!

We get loads of music submitted from time to time, which makes it hard to get around to and find the gems. Sadly, some have to be ignored (oh dear lord I am so sorry). When I look through all these submissions, something has to stick out to make me remember to come back to it later, whether it be good, bad, or strange.

This instance, it’s pretty strange. Certainly not the strangest thing I’ve ever HEARD, but it is the weirdest thing we’ve gotten in the mailbox, and that is Dead Neanderthalls. Think grindcore influenced drums and saxophone. That’s it.

They currently have a 10 minute EP of primitive drumming and saxaphone “wank” coming out. It’s not bad for what it’s supposed to be, in fact, I kind of like it in that avant garde sorta way. Check out the these tracks and tell me what you think:

Swedish death metallers Benighted Iris just released their demo EP for free. While the production quality leaves a lot to be desired, the quality of the music itself is pretty good. With proper studio time, these guys would sound killer. Their music sounds like a cross between Swedish death metal and groovy djent without being deathcore, citing influences such as Bloodbath, Gojira, and Sikth. Benighted Iris are worth keeping tabs on if you’re into the Swedish metal scene, but like I said, you’ll have to look over some of this production.

You can listen to their song “Sleep of Reason” below and download the whole EP right here.

How am I just now hearing about Corellia? This is right up my alley!

So who are Corellia exactly? Think intensely melodic progressive metal on par with the likes of Haunted Shores, Periphery, and Protest The Hero. If you’re into catchy vocal hooks with your metal, then this is where you should turn your attention to for the time being.

The band just posted a new song called “Glass Faces,” which comes off of their upcoming EP. The vocals might take some getting used to, as I know is the case with Periphery for a lot of you guys, but the 80′s metal sounding melody and delivery in the song’s chorus is too catchy to hate. Unless you’re a bad person, of course.

Their similarities with Periphery don’t end in the music however, as Matt Murphy is producing their EP. This is the same Matt Murphy that produced the vocals for Periphery’s debut. Small world! I’m keeping my eye on this band for sure.

Enjoy this picture of epic prog I’m painting? Check out Corellia on MySpace.

UK’s Daggers Drawn landed in my inbox this weekend, combining influences from Meshuggah (without the djent worship), Gojira, and early Katatonia to create songs focused on heavy and catchy riffs rather than the infinite number of breakdowns that the kids these days like to play.

Daggers Drawn have some pretty good jams, it’s just a shame the production value is a bit lacking. Small bands have to start somewhere. There’s some definite potential here, and they are definitely worth keeping tabs on. You can listen to their EP on their MySpace page.

Chances are, he has more talent at 17 than you do at 25.

I love this era of “do it yourself” metal. Anyone with passion and drive can create an album and put it online for the masses to digest. Sure, you get a lot of amateurish shit, but we tend to weed through and pick out the gems. Metal, in particular, is getting a great surge of sound in the home-spun “djent” department, what with Cloudkicker, Keith Merrow, Bulb/Periphery, Chimp Spanner, Tre Watson (whose album you can pick up here at HBIH), and the like.

In that regard, I got an email from one Andrew Reynolds (not the pro skater) concerning his one-man project Drewsif Stalin’s Musical Endeavors. Andrews a young gun, recently turning 17 in April. His music fits right in alongside in the djent sound, but in the same vein as Cloudkicker, Andrew throws in a twist of atmospheric post-rock and shoegaze from time to time, particularly on his EP, A Particularly Beautiful Day. He also has a full length album called An Insomniac’s Narrative, which features vocals on some tracks!

Just like the norm in this DIY genre, this shit’s free. Get your double-take of free music, courtesy of Drewsif Stalin’s Musical Endeavors. This may very well be my favorite music submission we’ve gotten so far. Thanks, Andrew!

Ever since I included a contact page with an email for bands and labels to get in touch with us, I’ve been getting a few music submissions each week. Some good, some okay. Honestly, I’ve never had anything terrible come across my inbox–and I hope to God it never happens, as I hate being a jerk to people and I don’t want to ruin any sort of credibility I may have by glorifying something I think is terrible. I could never do a post belittling a small band that sent me a request; I leave that to larger, more professional bands signed to labels that have less of a chance of seeing this shit. At most I just ignore it if I don’t care enough or if I feel that it doesn’t fit in with what I’d call “heavy.”

But sadly this exclusion also caused submissions by good bands that don’t exactly fall in a genre of metal that I liked to be ignored. I also don’t have time to review (and sometimes listen) all of these albums in full. So, last night I said “Fuck it,” and went through the submissions and will post some here for you in a column. For the first incarnation of Hits From The Inbox, I present to you…

Geronimo!

Geronimo! is a three piece experimental/prog rock band from Chicago, Illinois. Their lineup includes drums, guitar, and keys, building up a sound that strays into post-rock atmospheres, experimental noise, punk rock melodies, classic rock and metal inspired riffs, and everywhere in between. Their unpredictable sound is akin to later Faith No More, in that they pull inspiration from all over the place. Not to say they sound like FNM, mind you, but that same attitude of experimenting with different rock genres and styles is present here.

When listening to their debut album Fuzzy Dreams, it was as if I was listening to Jethro Tull one minute and The Flaming Lips the next. I admire bands that avoid being pigeon-holed, and Geronimo certainly do a good job at it. And besides, look at that picture, you know those guys have to be fun as shit (oh dear God, that pun was not intended.)

Here’s a song from their album, “Battery Acid Moustache“. By the end, shit actually gets pretty frantic and heavy.

If you liked that, check the guys out on MySpace.
