I’ve been expecting the new Contrarian album to release from before 2019 even started; we received the promo a while ago and I was absolutely blown away by the album. Building on everything that worked with their previous release, namely excellent progressive death metal in the style of the legendary progenitors of the genre, Death, Their Worm Never Dies is a joy to listen to. The more modern and polished production style of this album does much to remedy some of the flaws on the previous release, with every glorious note, sweep, and blast-beat now rendered with beautiful attention to detail. The result is an album that’s easier to parse, which is a good thing because there’s a whole lot going on during its runtime.

The composition of the album has also taken a bold step forward, as the track we’re premiering today will undoubtedly show you. More mellow and ambient passages have been added in, like the wonderful bass bridge right after the middle mark of this track. These passages do much to vary things up, offering a break in what can be an overwhelming amount of riffs, solos, and harsh vocals. Instead, more dynamic and complex track structures allow the listener to ground themselves and then return right to the chaos.

This also allows Contrarian to double down on the heavier passages; just head on down below to listen to the main riff from “Whomsoever Worships the Worm” to see what I mean. Once you’re done, don’t forget to pre-order the album right here. Don’t sleep on this one; it’s a belter.
