Grayceon – IV

We often rail against gimmicks here on Heavy Blog. That’s no coincidence; in its endless search for boundaries to push, metal will often grab whatever is closest to hand. However, it rarely takes the time to integrate whatever that crutch is into its composition and thus you get a gimmick, a once off or shallow use of something which could be cool and interested. Grayceon are a great example of how to avoid that. They splice their brand of stoner/doom metal with cello, baking it right into the composition. What could have easily been just another stoner metal band with a few string touches here and there turns into an album which utilizes its non-standard instruments in a varied and impressive way, adding it where necessary to amplify the core music and its impact.

Hey! Listen to The Armed (Again)!

Technically, this post has already been written. No, I don’t mean in the “bruh what if alternate realities are real and in it I am a vegetable of sorts that can talk?” kind of way, it’s just that we already told you to listen to this band in 2011. But a lot of abrasive water has flown under the bridge since then (although we also told you about them in 2015 and at other times) and something seems to be stirring in The Armed’s camp. Namely, the punk/mathcore/hardcore/batshit crazy band have released a new album called ONLY LOVE and you really need to listen to it. Yes, even if you’ve heard this band before. Yes, even if you didn’t like them before. This is a whole new beast.

Unmetal Monday – 5/7/18

There’s a lot happening in the music world, and we here at Heavy Blog try our very best to keep up with it! Like the vast majority of heavy music fans, our tastes are incredibly vast, with our 3X3s in each Playlist Update typically covering numerous genres and sometimes a different style in each square. While we have occasionally covered non-metal topics in past blog posts, we decided that a dedicated column was warranted in order to more completely recommend all of the music that we have been listening to. Unmetal Monday is a bi-weekly column which covers noteworthy tracks and albums from outside the metal universe, and we encourage you all to share your favorite non-metal picks from the week in the comments. This week, we’ll be highlighting a few albums and tracks that struck our fancy over the past few weeks. Head past the jump to dial down the distortion:

125 – Bands That ICS Vortex Isn’t In

Me and regular co-host Cody get together and discuss stuff. Cattle Decapitation being nice to students who were discriminated against, Limp Bizkit signing to Napalm Records, The Ghost Inside deciding to continue after their tragic accident, Metallica having some fun live despite Kirk, and Elliot Coleman doing a song for Dragonball Super. Then some recent music, like Alkaloid, Dimmu Borgir, Ihsahn, and Childish Gambino. Then we do a cool people section with God of War, and extended spoiler discussions of Westworld and Infinity War. Enjoy!
