Swedish act Lechery was born when Martin Bengtsson left Arch Enemy to pursue his own musical vision. The band, who play a very traditional and familiar style of classic, epic heavy metal, released their debut album Violator in 2008, and it was well received, but the band subsequently fell on hard times, with a series of unfortunates accidents and setbacks keeping them from capitalizing on the album release as well as they should have. Luckily, they managed to find their footing again, and now in 2018 they’ve released their third, and likely best, album, We Are All Born Evil.

Lechery’s brand of metal is heavily inspired by legendary acts such Iron Maiden and the late, great Ronnie James Dio, particularly his solo discography. While the band don’t particularly break much new ground on We Are All Born Evil, the performances and songwriting are rock solid and inspired, and in the same manner as the acts they seek to emulate, they can take a song with lyrics that might otherwise be dripping in cheese like lead single “Heavy Metal Invasion” and turn it into a fist-pumping anthem driven by guitar harmonies and punchy, clear production values that gives all the instruments an audible space in the mix without sounding hollow or thin. The guitars, in particular, have a fantastic punch to them, which helps the catchy riffs and Iron Maiden inspired harmonies to stand out.

We Are All Born Evil is a great example of the current traditional heavy metal revival, and Lechery scratch a very particular itch that should feel familiar to anyone missing Ronnie James Dio’s solo work or older Iron Maiden. While their previous two albums were good, safe epic heavy metal, this latest release feels like a band coming into their own as an act worth following for fans of traditional metal. Give them a listen if you’re a fan of the any of the acts previously mentioned, I think you’ll like what you hear!
