I’ve always been someone with a soft spot for symphonic black metal, ever since first discovering Emperor and their classic album In the Nightside Eclipse, and have had an on-again, off-again infatuation with the genre and it’s eccentricities ever since.  One of my biggest complaints about the genre, however, was that bands would often skimp on production (whether out of necessity or adherence to artistic vision) and as a result their compositions and orchestration would be drowned out by the guitars and drums. Thankfully, bands in the genre have moved towards a production and mixing style that allows the listener to better appreciate the songwriting while still sounding true to the genre’s roots.

Sweden’s Mist of Misery are one of the bands currently dabbling in this style of black metal, and their new release Fields Of Isolation is the second of two EP’s that serve as a bridge between their previous album, Absence, and their upcoming 2018 full length.  Set for release on December 15th, it’s an excellent example of the genre with some interesting structural and songwriting ideas working to set it apart from their peers in the scene.

Give the track “Hymm to Silence” a listen to see what I mean, especially about the production, and check the full EP out when it releases later this month!
