Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past month, you’d know that Mayhem trekked around North America and froze the continent over performing their first full-length album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, in its entirety. Maryland Deathfest were the lucky recipients of such a performance last year, but the band saw fit to dominate the rest of North America with repeat performances. Although the tour with Black Anvil and Inquisition ended February 19th at the Gramercy Theater in New York City, we were given the opportunity to witness a special, intimate performance at Brooklyn’s Saint Vitus Bar.

Performing the whole album with minimal breaks in between each song, vocalist Attila was keen to swing around a skull during the brutal black metal session, with the band turning Saint Vitus from a sweltering, sweaty incubator to a spiritual barren, frozen wasteland of Norway (although it was still a sweltering, sweaty incubator, just with a copious amount of fog filling the room). Once they started playing the opening track “Funeral Fog,” the crowd morphed into a massive, pulsing mound of flesh, taking part in the ritual that was happening before us. You can witness the performance via our friends at Metal Injection, but please do enjoy the photos below!
