Once upon a time, there existed a band, a band that so flawlessly wed the distinct styles of emoviolence and post rock into one beautiful, dark, haunting matrimony. The aggressive parts retained their energy without diluting the raw chaos and anger, passionate bursts of emotion, while the more melodic parts gave the listener a moment to rest and reflect on what they had just experienced. This band was of course seminal screamo/skramz act Welcome to the Plague Year, and while they (sadly) may no longer be with us, their legacy is still felt today, and when it is, leads to some truly interesting, complex music. That sentiment is what brings us to The Drowned God, a new post metal/post hardcore act out of Lansdale, PA, an area filled to the brim with new, talented bands. Check out some of their stuff below!

While the influence of acts like WTTPY maybe prominent in their sound, it is not something that defines them too heavily, as they incorporate many more elements of doom and black metal to create a sound that is versatile in its own way. Tension is built through the screamed, distorted vocals, but also through the moments of doom and gloom ambiance, drawing the listener in and creating a sense of calm before the next flurry of chaotic guitar attacks assaults them. This stuff is heavily recommended for fans of bands such as Cult of Luna, Vattnet Viskar, Portraits of Past, and Touche Amore, which, somewhat oddly, work as accurate measures of this band’s sound. Their stuff is also free on their Bandcamp, so be sure to check it out!
