Listen to the last album by HIM, Venus Doom. It's the heaviest album they have put out. And it is my favorite HIM album. I am a DIEHARD HIM fan, but i will admit... "Screamworks" is just too poppy.

It didn't have anything too terribly memorable like Wings of a Butterfly. That guitar line is simple but memorable. But it was still kinda fun to listen to. This will definitely get them a stronger radio presence in America. Make of it what you will.

This was a good and honest review, though i don't quite understand the attitude towards bands you haven't heard. Or genre-worshipping, for that matter. I like HIM, i like... Slayer and Black Sabbath, for example. Well, i guess i'm just more open minded towards hooks and melodies than most of the people who call themselves "true metalheads" (what a moronic term). Or music in general. Good to see though, that there's people who can get out of their little box and fuck the presumptions.

HIM has come a long way. When they started in 1996, they were pretty much concerned "gothic metal". Ville's voice (or style of singing) has also changed a lot since those days. Check out Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 (yeah i know it's corny title), and give it a go. Maybe you like that one even more. Great thing about this band is, you never know which direction they're going to go next. The album before Screamworks (Venus Doom) was kinda like return to their roots, much darker and heavier stuff.. One 10 minute song which is half-instrumental, etc. What you've heard in Screamworks, is just one side of this band.

That's my two cents. Have a great winter, or what's left of it.

I can't say I've ever listened to HIM before, but I probably have a similar preconception as you did. As far as I can tell from the video you posted, they seem like a cross between Coheed (who I like) and The Rasmus (who I don't). Did you ever get The Rasmus in America? They were a very brief flash in the pan over here. Similar sort of quasi-metal, but basically pop songs packaged in a broody...package. See 'In the Shadows' for their most well known song.

I can't believe I even remember them!
